Removing an old toilet seat

I need to replace an old toilet seat, I’ve got everything off bar the hinges (it’s a hidden toilet with no access to bolts/screws underneath) the screws are just spinning around in the plastic fixings so I can’t get the final bits off. I’ve tried to take the head off the screw with a putty knife and hammer but that was unsuccessful. any advice would be great as it is very frustrating.

if you can’t access the bolts underneath and manage to cut these off somehow, you’ll probably have a hard time fitting the new ones!

you can probably leave these on and use them for the new loo seat. we did the same recently. the old hinges didn’t line up perfectly to the new holes but we tilted the hinges in slightly and it works fine.

@Hermione D - I was considering the full space under the stairs leading up to the current wall, and possibly leaving the door where it is, accessed then from the kitchen. @jonathandb1972 - I know what you mean about the space feeling small in the living room with the under stairs closed off. I also thought about a complete open plan. Reading some other discussions it seems that a downstairs toilet helps in terms of it's resale value so I'm hesitant to remove it completely. However, we are planning an extension in the (distant) future, so maybe leaving the pipework in place to build a loo on the other side of what is currently the external wall would make sense... by the way I'm 30 and my Mum is fit and well at 54 and no issues with stairs!

Thanks @rinq and @Maths Wife, there are definitely a lot of things to think about, although it looks like there is a general consensus going on over some of the areas like toilet/boiler etc. I need to check in with the plumber on putting the boiler on the left of the window, as you can see from @rinq plan there is a new wall going on the outside and this may cause issues with required regs distances from windows etc. I like the idea of a wooden counter for the bowls, and carrying this into the alcove would be a neat idea. Im going to change the storage/cupboard from double doors to just one sliding door, with a walk in area and shelves either side. As the two doors are a nightmare. I was thinking of 2 ideas for the position of your toilet... the green option is great as it’s out of the way, under the stairs but reduces the middle room and the toilet pipes are far... Or the blue option: reduces your kitchen, but great for the pipe just above. It depends on many things... Do you have children, in that case, they might need space to play/toys... Do you want 2 dinning areas? Ie: breakfast and middle room... I would personally change the window in the middle room, for a French door... and take the wall off as you mentioned. This would create a nice spacious dining room. I would use the breakfast room as a comfy snug to watch my garden grow while reading a book with a coffee!

hi there. best option to have most light in you would like to have is to install a nice and full width bifold door. they are juicy on price but not horrible expensive. bathroom refurb usually can cost you about up to 5k£ just to take in consideration bifold door would be about 3k£ including installation your extension would be about 16k£ because of a limited access and I'm not to sure what sort of refurb are involved too as haven't seen all existing drawings. kitchen assume about 2.5k£ incl installation for a decent mid range stuff flooring painting and other bits and pieces can be about up to 3k£ in the new and existing area dpc issue can be sorted with A, as you mention lower a ground 150mm B, install new dpc 150mm above the ground and joint it together with a new extension and tank out externally by the side of a building. that would be another 3-4k£ job if you would like to refurb your diner area too that can be about 600£/m2. as i don't know the exact area just can give you an average cost per a m2. in a first place thats what i can see realistic. in total

Last time I had a threaded screw, I bought a metal drill bit and drilled right through head to the threaded part and knocked the rest of the head off.

Thanks Wumi, in the end i bought a heavy duty hack saw and managed to cut the heads off! new seat successfully installed :)
