How to keep the wall lights in the alcoves while adding the shelves?

Hello, we got a fairly standard Edwardian house. The front room has got a standard alcove space beside chimney breast.

There's a wall light there now, so I'd like to get ideas - is there a way to keep both?

Anyone done something similar and can make suggestions?

Depends what you want the light for, If you put shelves in you could convert the wall light to a lamp on the shelf, or use LED strips under the shelves to illuminate the whole alcove with a soft glow. If you have a fancy wall light and want to keep it with shelves that would be hard but not impossible, any photos?

To brighten up that area you could paint the chimney breast darker colour and the alcoves white for great contrast or use mirror behind the shelves to reflect the light :)

We had the same look in our last house which was Victorian. On the left alcove we had built a contemporary shelving unit that was staggered ie so it was lower near the chimney and got higher at the end. Was great for displaying artwork, vases, CDs etc without being too boring. On the right, I had a simple hall table with a huge vase of flowers on it - which also doubled as a laptop desk.

I would remove the scooped headboard that accentuates the alcove. I certainly wouldn't 'hang' a mirror but opt for clean lines. Instead of a headboard I would use lateral tongue & groove up to the light switches above the bed up to the alcove & as far as the end of the bedside cabinets to give the bed a ships cabin feel. A good joiner could also add bedside cupboards to the "headboard" to continue the ships cabin feel. I would continue the lateral tongue & groove into the alcove, all over, which would be higher than the T&G above the bed but keeps it cohesive & makes a real integrated feature of the alcove. I think lateral T&G keeps it contemporary & not seaside twee. I would T&G the whole bed area in this way & keep the rest of the room pretty simple. If you wanted a mirror I would have a glazier cut a porthole mirror in the centre of the alcove surrounded by the tongue & groove. All the T&G in the whole bed area should be painted in the same colour i think so that the alcove becomes part of the whole. It will be a lovely individual feature but for success the alcove has to be integrated , i feel. A few books & a few natural pieces would look great on the bottom ledge of the alcove & would be useful too. You are so lucky to already have bed side lights & I would just change the fittings to a contemporary cabin style light on either side. There are lots around & are usually metal I think.

Hi Ruth, it all depends on what you need. If you are not too desperate for extra storate, then keep the look light an airy and install just shelving. But don't put in two many shelves, that might look busy. You could also paint the back of the alcove in a darker shade than the rest of the walls, to give it more depth. Make sure you have symmetrical shelving on both sides of the fire place. BTW, I love the arched shaped alcoves, they look stunning! Here are some photos for inspiration. How did you resolve the kitchen wall lighting in the end?? I would be really interested to know what you did and whether you are happy with the result, as I am in the process of purchasing a house with exactly the same set up on the wall where the hob is, and am wondering how best to create ambient/task lighting over that worktop.

As the two people above have suggested,

you could definitely add in a subtle LED lights hidden under the shelves so you wouldn't know they are there - this is a great way of adding a glowing aurora to the room and just adding some extra ambience - that way you won't lose the light that you currently have in this area.

Antique, speckled and distressed mirror panels are really proving popular at the moment, they are a great way to boost and reflect light around the room but also offer a subtle feature design. Again, you could add in some low warm white thin LED strips just so it offers some additional light and glow in that area.

Do you have any images of the current lights/chimney set up as it currently is so that we can see what you have and come up with some more tailored ideas for you?
