Annoyed at delays

Hi all? Just wanting to vent really, we're looking for an electrician to do one day of simple work in a couple of bedrooms before we get them skimmed ready to decorate. We're having no luck finding anyone who's available any sooner than 2 months! It's so frustrating. Looks like our plans for building work next year are just pipe dreams as even this year's projects won't be done at this rate.

I know, it's very frustrating. We're in month 11 of a project which was supposed to take 6 months, and we are far from finished. I am so over living in a building site! Unfortunately it's the same everywhere with huge demand on labour and materials, for domestic and commercial projects. My advice would be to put in a firm booking with someone who can do it in 2 months - you will at least know what timings you are working towards. I doubt you'll find anyone available sooner than that.

Thanks for listening....I'm sorry you are struggling too. Yes we have said we'll book him in diary anyway and will just have to reorganise our thinking in terms of what we could achieve. I really didn't want to do all 4 bedrooms at the same time but since I've now got enough time to get them stripped and prepped maybe it would be sensible to give him 2 days of electrical work and just do it all together while we have him. Nightmare though as will have to move all clothes and entire offcie/craft room into conservatory. Aaagggghhhh. Blooming covid x brexit = misery for homeowners. Good luck getting your project completed.

Hi @Ollie Chambers ah we still haven’t started the work! Mainly delays due to our indecision! We’re starting February now and have decided to go with the kitchen in the ‘middle room’ and the living area in the 3m x 4.5m extension with sliding doors across. The main issue is still the extraction- it’s not a huge space so hob not too far from doors and as having sliding we can open just slightly and have opening roof windows in extension. We’re also having a ducted extractor fitted which will go through the utility (through ceiling) to outside. This can be ducted for 5metres (reducing by 1.2 for every turn) would be too far for you as yours is larger than ours? It’s going to cost quite a lot and we’re still exploring this as I’m not convinced it’s worth the cost as I guess the further the distance to the opening the more reduced the extraction. We cook a lot so we need a system that works. It’s not perfect I’d much prefer to have a window/outside wall for extraction but we have considered every other option and this one suits us best. I think it will be a case of the doors being regularly opened! I don’t have any floor plans etc but am happy to send you some and update you when the work is complete.

Hi Rowen, I can't quite identify the knobs/handles in Claire's images (and there are quite a few others in this thread!), but we may be able to help source what you are looking for. We have a variety of hadle suppliers, but one of our favourite for "cup & knob" in a variety of lovely finishes is Crofts & Assinder - crofts.co.uk - a really great, British company with some lovely designs and finishes. Have a browse of the website and see if any are close to what you seek. If you give me an idea of which is the style you particularly like, happy to try and help. The OH sprayed our kitchen cabinets with a professional spray gun, but he did have all of the proper specialist masks and protective clothing etc. He set up a spray booth - inside while the kitchen was being remodelled and then outside in a gazebo once the kitchen had the flooring done. The finish was excellent and where we've needed to touch up, he's just done it with slightly watered down paint on a sponge or brush. We've rollered and brushed units before and spraying gives by far the best finish and soooooo much quicker. We went for F&B Oval Room Blue - the reason being the F&B paints are perfect for use with a spray gun, whereas a lot of "matched" paint doesn't spray as well and clogs the gun. Doesn't the kitchen manufacturers have a standard colour you like or could you choose a RAL colour you like. Alternatively, wouldn't the manufacturers just paint it with F&B paint for you?

Hello, you have some really good options now. Personally what struck me was how many doors there are in this area/area's. It seems to inhibit flow. As you said you seems to always be going "around" items. In the new proposed design I was wondering why you need a table next to a bench with there also being a table in the dining room? As someone else mentioned the powder and utility room seem overly large in comparison to the kitchen and what you want to achieve. Forgive my crude alterations, I had about 5 minutes to spare, here are some other thoughts to the above, but, the best option will really depend on how you want to live in this new area and the functional flow you are after. You can easily keep the wall between the kitchen and dining in place. Or, you can remove all or part of it. If part is structural and small lintel can easily be added (generally). Opening it up will allow more natural light and help with overall flow, however, retaining some of the wall also maintains a degree of privacy and can allow for hanging of art or positioning of other furniture against the retained wall. You could also add a sliding door between the kitchen and dining if you wished, however, this could be a compromise if you can create a cavity slider. The central island bench has an overhang so can easily accommodate breakfast, family dinners, homework in view (put in lots of USB and power outlets in this island). You could also make the bench a bit wide and drop part of the height to a normal table height, although I believe this would compromise the flow. Options also exist to remove some of the dining wall to the hall. But, not knowing the house dynamics this could impact on required noise control and heat/cooling requirements. Again sliders to the dining room/hall way can increase the effective space in both areas. They could be hung externally on the hall side.. Slot windows above the main kitchen bench can also bring in light. WM and Dryer can be incorporated in the kitchen cupboards. So many options. Good luck! Julie An idea of how slot windows can look.

I feel your pain. I needed a decorator to paint several rooms. I found two but they said they couldn’t do it for 4 months and they would contact me nearer the time (no actual date). I’ll be honest I though that was the last time I would hear from them……..but they did call me and fitted me in the next week and did a lovely job. I think having a list of work you want done to make it worth their while is a good idea.

It’s good to vent Ruth!! I’m very lucky in that I married a Design Engineer who can turn his hand to most jobs but hope you get sorted soon.
(Re colourhappy: Daft thing is, many going to uni will end up stacking shelves. The schools gear kids to go into higher education when many would benefit more from the modern apprenticeship scheme. My beautiful talented niece, despite doing well academically decided to go down that line and is now a heating engineer. She earns good money and also now has many practical skills that she uses around her own home. Another bonus is that many lone female customers appreciate another lady in their house to do work.)
