Lighting an entrance hall

I'd appreciate your thoughts on having ceiling spotlights in an entrance hall, rather than pendant lighting? I am buying a new build house and that is what is showing n the current electrial plan all througout the house. I have requested pendant lighting for the family room (to cosy it up) but I'm not sure about the hall. The hall should should have plenty of natural light. and the house is a fairly traitional style in a rural location. Thanks in advance,

Hi Linda, check the ceiling height. I would always avoid downlights in a hall (especially in a house with a traditional feel), and in fact in all the rooms with the exception of those where you want good task lighting (kitchen and bathroom), and even then I'd be wanting additional circuits for pendants and other layered lighting. I suspect they are being planned because the ceilings are too low for pendants. So this may affect whether you want to buy the house. If you are happy with the height, you could ask them to provide fittings for flush ceiling lights rather than downlights, which will give a cosier, more welcoming feel. Jim Lawrence's range of flush ceiling lights would work well in a traditional style of house.

or get them to install spots which are directional - so you can point them at the walls rather than straight down to the floor - they can light up art on the walls for example. not so direct harsh overhead light. generally agree with above though - avoid wherever possible. another option is do wall lights instead, but you need to be careful with placement so that you still have space to hang art etc.

Hi miss. To put just right and the best solution for your entrance is very important and we can say dificould to. There is many important facts you should think about ( architecture situacion, your taste and wishes, investition, how strong is the day light etc.) You have two posibilities, chouse and make artistic stained glass before paonting the interior to chouse color of wall on stained glass or second which is more dificould and left to designer of glass less space is to make the project for already colored ambient. If its important for you is great to think input the glasses in triplex glass sistem (stained glass is in the midle of two glasses) to protect them, easy cleaning and get a good U thermo index. You can use one of two diferent technics of stained glass (leaded or "Tiffany"). Leaded glass is very old technic of producing windo glasses and traditionaly used for victorial style. The star of Art Noveu is Tiffay technic. But for the doors and ambient we more prefer artistic glasses in "Tiffany" becouse it is much more strong and delicat look from near position. Special in arabic countries is very popular rich victorian mansions with new "tiffany" stained glasses inside. Any way its my opinion and recomendation to use interior designer or master artist for design of stained glass art to make your project just perfect and you will lather nor regret where you invested the money. I can say you the price for autor unique slech will be from 50EUR. Here are some photos however the panoramic ones aren't very good as the make the walls look curved. The window wall with radiator is the front and is about 8ft wide the long wall with fireplace is about 12ft upto the beam and then another 5 ft after the beam.

You can find near neutrals from every Hue Family. Your bannister & flooring (at least from photos) appear to belong to the Yellow-Red Hue Family. One approach could be to select paint colours from the Yellow Hue Family as a bridge between the greenier selections in one room, to the warm wood in the other. Another way might be to choose a fabulous art work or stair runner and base wall colour choice in relation to that? Not necessarily exactly the same colours as your inspiration piece, but lighter/darker/warmer/cooler from the same Hue Family neighbourhood. It’s a whole lot easier to pull colours from these, more expensive and semi-permanent items, than it is to find a carpet to fit beautifully with your wall. Have a look at the Colorographies at The Land of Color for near neutrals from the Yellow Hue Family as a starting point.
