Design Dilemma Renovating Living Rooms

Help/ Advice On Wall Cabinet Design

Hiya, I’ve decided to build a media wall using IKEA wall cabinets (see photo of working in progress), because we were quoted over £6k for a carpenter to do the whole wall for us. However we are getting the doors done professionally made.

Anyway, the dilemma is; I’ve got a shelf space (Red area on my diagram). The options is whether to have that shelf space in a different colour to the rest of wall unit or to carry on with the white unit throughout.

I will post the grey wood panel that I’m thinking of.
The wall behind where the television will go will also be the same grey colour.

Please also ignore the fact that there two televisions. We don’t love watching tv that much. My daughter broke the larger tv and Samsung are due to repair it in a couple of weeks. So we are using the small one until it’s fixed.

We will have 2 x 60cm wide wood slats panel on the other side of the television.

£6000 to do that? I had a whole wall of floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes made for £3500 and I thought that was expensive. Worth getting more quotes do you think?

Hi Gemma. Our old kitchen had a similar problem with the extractor reaching the outside wall via a run along the top of a series of wall cabinets. As we didn't want a the same problem we redesigned our new kitchen with the hob on the opposite side of the room on an outside wall. It now works much more efficiently as the extracted air is sucked out immediately behind the extraction unit.

As far as it being two brick rather than one and a half it is probably because of the size of the space. Given the width of your doors I think he likely concluded that a half brick close to the door wouldn't have the strength required. I also think what he has delivered looks like the drawing you gave him. Personally I don't think this feature adds anything to your extension because this type of feature would normally be found only on the front elevation and also because in the front it makes a large area of brickwork more interesting but you don't have that large brickwork area because of the size of the glazing. Having seen the feature I would be getting him to re-lay that area without the it and consider getting a single course of the feature brick laid just below the windows or possibly just below the roof to give the roof more presence

There is just the issue of the cupboard in he corner, do you think I should go brown to match the vanity unit, white or grey? Or a mix? My husband started painting the doors in a light blue colour but it doesn’t seem to come together with the rest of the scheme unless I put some down in it somewhere? Any ideas?

If you look above you will see I answered this question in 2018. I must repeat get hold or the manufacturer of the gas hob. La Cornue which I used to be the exclusive importer of from France has huge burners, which are commercial in size and use, so 150mm would not be nearly enough on one. The manufacturer will have done tests and should be able to give definitive guidance. Don’t forget if you put a pan on the hob the flame will span out far further under it. On Monday I would get hold of the manufacturer - I hope that helps.

That was the cheapest of the quotes we received. The top quote for a full 4meter floor to ceiling handmade media wall was £7.5k.

To be honest their work looked fantastic, but need less to say I had to look for an alternative solution.

the high quotes are probably due to current timber shortage. most timber seems to be atleast doubled in price at the moment!

I think your alternative is looking great though!
to answer your question, if the tv inset and the shelf are the only sections not covered by a door I think they should match, so if going grey behind tv i would probably go grey in the shelf bit too

Goodness prices have gone up so I don’t blame you for doing it yourself. I agree with Becci to keep the grey throughout. It will look more cohesive.

Prices have gone up this year is true, Egger prices have gone up 3 times so far by about 13.5% in total, but not enough to justify a few units like that being 6k,

Working (slow) progress....
Got to finish off the wall panels & get the doors made for the cupboards/draws.
Unfortunately, I’m only able to work on the lounge one day a week.
