ideas for staircase

We are going to renovate our whole house next year and will be moving the front door/hallway to better suit the house.
This will mean that the staircase will cross the hallway and will be the first thing you see when you enter the house.
I’m struggling for ideas, any shared thoughts would be appreciated

It's a large hallway so it could take a central table on a large rug to detract from the stairs, or you could upgrade your stairs to make them a grand feature.

Sarah L the problem i have is there is only 5 steps before the turn and then it goes across the hallway, I think we will have to invest in the staircase as a statement piece, that is very minimal so that it doesn’t cut off the view after it

Hello pl_smith, I like the sound of that! :)) Well you can try a few places... get some samples and see what feels right.. There's a company called http://www.nakedflooring.co.uk/ or http://www.alternativeflooring.com/collection/naturals There is also 1 I found from the link Minnie sent you http://www.floormats.co.uk/stairtreads/stair-treads-rectangular-1/sisal-stair-tread-sets This doesn't have a fabric or leather boarder but looks woven like you mentioned earlier.... The best examples I found were from Natural Home Rugs which is an American site as they have the boarder I mentioned. I am certain though that you will be able to have the same thing produced here if you like it. What I would do is give several places a ring and explain what you're looking for and get some quotes... May be that you can get some discount on quantity.... I think Naked Flooring is a good place to ask. Coir is a favourite Superior black sisal weft is one I have asked for before, and I do remember discussing boarder colours for a rug I had made for a client. I think it was the same place but it was a year ago.. : ))

I think that you have budget enough to consider extending. This plan is a little smaller so might well meet your budget. In my opinion you could research the cost of builders in your area, cost any additional work you want to do then when you know how much square footage you can afford to build start exploring different layouts. A concept planner would be a cost effective way to do this.

Wow, thank you everyone for your extremely helpful advice and ideas. I had not appreciated the safety issue with the current layout as strongly, but you have swayed me. (Thanks Jonathan). First, as a few of you have asked, I’ve attached a photo with the bathroom dimensions. Hopefully this is legible! I like the shelf/utility cupboard idea, however I’m concerned that this would take away too much space for toilet/sink/shower area. Jules Mc, I think the toilet reconfiguration behind the pony wall is a brilliant idea. If we are unable to play around with the current levels, I think this is an ideal solution. Jonathan, thank you so much for these options. Unfortunately we have a wall protruding in front of the entrance to the bathroom, so I don’t think that there is room for a door to open outwards, or for stairs to be built outside. Man About the House, this is absolutely incredible! It maximises the space while still allowing for the fun/eccentric aspect of the elevated floor plan to remain. I would never have thought of this arrangement. Would raising the floors for most of the bathroom be a major added cost? I’m a bit nervous that the diagonal wall (currently next to toilet where staircase is underneath) would protrude too much into the walkway of the shower. But maybe there would be enough space, and could build a vertical cabinet or shelf to cover up this slope? Again, thank you all for your comment and your time, I’m seeing this project in a whole new light now!

absolutely Loving these ideas! Thanks so much. i did wonder if our stairs may be too narrow for a runner but then I’ve seen lots of similar stairs with a runner and seems to work well (albeit they are in pictures only). Do you think a whipped edge rather than taping will help it look less narrow? Thanks!

Is there really no alternative as I couldn't look at that set-up on coming in the door every day.

I don’t think the stairs themselves are the problem but the location in front of the double doors. In this situation, I think a single door is preferable.

I agree with tamp about maybe just having a single door. However regarding the stairs themselves, a quick Google found this company who have some lovely minimalist ideas that might work. They seem to be London based though… https://www.london-joinery.com/service/wooden-stairs-bespoke-staircases/

Temp, I have oak french doors with glass side panels that would stretch the whole width of the corridor , I have thought about using them as i could leave one for open?

I didn’t realise the doors were already in situ. We have very similar stairs, just going left to right instead on entering the front door but they only go over one door. Is it the design / shape of the stairs or the position across the doors that bothers you?

Temp75, none of this work has taken place, these doors are from the hallway to living room, which will be closed up, this will be a new opening from hallway to the kitchen.

What bothers me as you come through the door you are going to have a staircase crossing the corridor (which I have no choice) which will break your line of site.

The original design was with only 3 steps and then a turn and up, but for me that was to low over the hallway. We then managed to ginger a few things upstairs and add 3 more steps before the turn and have 6 in total before the turn, which I a lot better than before, but I still find it weird and trying to find similar online, I come up blank. The only design we’ve seen that might work is central spine staircase, big investment, but wow factor, If we have got it right.

Could you extend the staircase so forward and move the entrance of the top left room further along?

I don’t know if this helps with visualising a similar setup but this is our staircase from the front door entry.

Wumi - we would love to be able to do this , but if we went with a straight staircase we would loose space upstairs because of the head height and we are not willing to loose anymore.

Tamp75- thank you for sharing, that is nearly exactly how our staircase will go and we have about 1.2m space beyond the staircase to the door. What is the width of your hall?
