How to make a single bed look cosy?

After a quick search on the internet, I haven’t found much on how to make a single bed in terms of cushions and blankets. As the colder months approach, I want my bed to feel extremely cosy how I’m not sure about the basics. How many cushions? How many throws? What sizes/colours? And how to arrange them? Thanks in advance!

Is the single bed out in the open at daytime? If not, one pillow and a duvet will do.

(I'm the practical type, who folds the duvet open during daytime for ventilation.)

I have co-ordinated 2 cushions in front of the 2 pillows and a folded throw at the foot of the bed. Mine is a double bed but you could have one pillow and two smaller cushions and a smaller throw at the foot of the bed. Of course you can have as many cushions as you wish but they do get in the way and can get annoying! Sometimes a pillow and duvet is enough.

A belated THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This is the final result. We're super happy with it. Room A north facing "through-lounge" in a new build, 3 bed semi detached house Paint Walls: Purbeck Stone, Farrow & Ball Ceiling: Strong White, Farrow & Ball By the way, the room isn't as long and skinny as it looks in the photos. Painting it all one colour actually made it feel much, much larger. We were really impressed with the quality of advice the F&B staff gave us in regards to colour. We loved Purbeck Stone from the minute we saw it, and being brave really paid off.

I like having small collections of things that remind me of good times, like some family photos, a souvenir or something I picked up on a fun vacation, a gift from a good friend, etc. My rooms are similar to old time parlors with small collections of "curiosities" that get people talking, like my certificate for finishing my apprentice blacksmithing class that I had framed and hang on my wall, or the photo of me in my Civil War uniform with my team's cannon. You need warm tones and a mixture of textures. Persoanally, I would have a large fluffy rug by the sofa and drape throws on the sofa to soften the edges. I am sure the landlord would want you to make the property comfortable. After all, a happy tenant is more likely to look after the place. Also, have you considered buying some large wicker trunks for the little ones toys. If you stack them they will look nice and protect the windows. Also, being trunks, they will look nice from both the hall and the living room area

Hi I’m also a developer/PRL, and the best price of advice I was given when I was starting out was to remember that on low to mid range profit projects (if not all projects) controlling your spending is the most important thing to remember, and every £ you spend is a £ less profit. I too hate uPVC windows and would not have them on my own home, but many people do like them and see them as a positive when it comes to buying/selling – just look at the houses either side of your house, and I assume along the whole of the street; people do like them! With my developer head on I would suggest that you try to work with what you already have - clean the uPVC frames inside and out with a solvent based professional cleaner, these really shift dirt and marks, and to a certain extent make scratches less noticeable as it removes the ingrained dirt. Replace the interior handles – new ones can be found online at around £1.99 each if you bulk buy. Replace any worn seals with a new universal fitting seal (approx £16 for 20m). If any of the windows are blown/misted, look at replacing the sealed glazed unit instead of the whole window, again the sealed units can be found quite cheaply online. With regards to your porch, it looks like it is integrated with the front window, so removing it would be a time consuming and costly job, so I would leave it as is and possibly look at just replacing the outer door, ideally one with a glazed panel to give a bit more light. I know you said you don't like uPVC doors, however, composite doors are more expensive. As you won't be living there does it really matter if you install a white uPVC door, as long it is the most tasteful and least offensive one you can find. An alternative would be to install fully glazed French doors with both sides opening, which would possibly mean that the doors can open inwards. All of these can be bought online and be fitted yourself – however, you will need to check if you will require a FENSA certificate issuing for the work, otherwise this could cause issues when you come to sell. I wouldn't advise painting the uPVC, as it is really difficult to obtain a good finish, and nothing looks worse than poorly finished paintwork either inside or outside. As others have said, remove the nets, put up some nice curtains (these can be removed and reused on other projects), don't worry regarding privacy, as again you will not be living there, and it will allow more light into the room. If the privacy angle does bother you, you can always put a plain white voile (costs around £2 per m, and a couple of £ for the rod) up at the window with little or no fullness, which gives a more modern, less fussy finish. I would move the dustbins to the rear of the property, and put a couple of large pots in the front garden – I tend to use Olive trees as they can be shaped and don't mind too much if they aren't watered regularly – these can also be removed and used on other projects. In our twin guest room I have simple white pillow covers and under sheet with a white 4.5tog duvet in a white cover - then I have a grey and white gingham 4.5tog duvet folded down at the end and a woollen blanket over that ( think they are orange ones on there at the moment ? Or maybe tartan ) I have a gingham cushion plonked on the pillow end and that’s echoed on the other bed too……. ha ! Took a snap but the grandchildren have been in there !!! Will see if I can find another photo on my phone !!

It would still be a great idea to have comfortable sheets, for your own comfort! Depending on how cold it is where you are something thermal even. A duvet with the appropriate tog and a material that feels warming to the touch. As well as your pillow that you sleep on a couple of cushions would look inviting, I'd do one in front of the other and ensure they are varying sizes. Add some texture to your bed so definitely a throw is a good idea something chunky knit perhaps or something super soft to the touch.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I woke up freezing this morning despite a thick duvet and throw. Would 2 throws be ok or is that too much?

I think that's absolutely fine! What I like to do is put a soft fluffy one on top of my sheets under the duvet to sleep on top of xx
