Garden wall help

Can anyone please help on how to remove the small wall that goes round the conservatory?
We have young kids so would ideally like the garden completely flattened, Is this possible?
If not, any other ideas how to stop it been such a hazard for the kids?

The lawn is higher than the house so even if you take the wall out you will need some sort of steps to access the lawn unless you have a slight slope.

I would be tempted to get rid of the lawned area to the side of the conservatory and have some decking then you only have to deal with a straight run across the whole of the garden where you could put some slabbed steps, or even utilise some of the decking to make steps as long as it’s grooved and not slippery.

If it's a temporary fix then I think I'd look at child safety fencing. It'd cost a lot less than flattening the garden, would look pretty and could easily be removed as soon as they're old enough to not fall off the wall.

The box is locked with a mortice key (5 lever) and a lock that is welded into place. Not sure you can see the key hole on this image - but it is there. It’s also welded to the ground and is made of structural steel - using intimidation tactics to dissuade the opportunist. The added security is that it’s actually disguised as a planter and so most people are surprised to find it provides nearly 4sqm of extra storage. If you are in London, come for a tour!

I can't really tell from the pics how your neighbour's fence posts go in to the ground. That's the only sticky wicket. It looks like the retaining wall is purely inside the boundary and therefore, shouldn't affect the fence. You would ideally take away some of the bricks from near the bottom of the fence post to see how it's secured in to the ground. ( ie, I can't tell if the fence post is sitting on the wall, attached to it etc, it looks like it's behind it, but check ). Here's a good site on installing sleeper walls. wooden supplies.co.uk

Have you thought of gabions, provided you put the facing layer of something attractive that you like you can fill the back with all the old bricks and rubble (no soil) that would save on the amount of money you would have to spend on the facing and journeys to the tip to get rid of rubbish. If you wanted you could add a decking board, or anything you fancied on the top to use as seating this doesn't need to be the full width of the garden and is quite cheap to buy but do treat with preservative to give a long life, I definitely would put plants behind to stop people tripping over and falling on to the patio. Hi, we've recently purchased a new build house and we're struggling a bit with how to configure the garden due to the way it slopes. It's essentially just a 10m x 10m square at the moment with a few squares of pavement, and a slope from the top left towards the house and to the right fence. (see pics) We're trying to work with the level as much as possible to reduce the cost of levelling, and we're thinking of a deck in the top right (sunspot), and a raised lawn in the top left, with some steps and sleeper beds / steps around the garden to support it. (see drawing) Does anyone with any garden experience have any thoughts on how feasible something like this would be and how much it would roughly cost? Or any alternative ideas for the garden? We have a dog so a lawn is essential, and a deck or patio in the top right is pretty much a given for us. Any ideas/design tips would really be appreciated! We're looking for something quite modern, ideally with levels to create interest and reduce the levelling costs (if this even achieves that?)

Hi Louise,
The wall is there to retain the soil and address a change in level that you have in your garden.
In line with what Daisy said, I would get rid of the lawn area to the side of the consevatory. I would make it a paved area continuous to and at the same level as the path that you have around the conservatory. This would leave you with a clear straight change of level in the garden that you could make safer by having raised beds at the edge of the lawn (they could act as "fencing" but prettier) and just a small opened space as access to steps to the lower part (paved area around conservatory). I can see in the picture that you currently have only one step between lawn and paved area. I would make it two shorter steps to increase safety as well. Doing this will involve shifting soil out of your garden, which is not cheap. So if you are after a quick and temporary fix, and not a redesign of your garden, I would leave it as is and just go for fencing around the lawn edges as ali suggested.
