best bay poles for Victorian windows

Just looking advice on DIY bay poles for my bay windows. The window casings are very thick and I want the pole above them so needs to sit out

You can get chrome poles that go around the corner and they can be hung from the ceiling.

However I will forewarn you they are poor. I know this because I have them. The curtains struggle to get around the angle and I got so sick and tired of struggling with them that I now have blinds which are far easier to deal with. I just leave the curtains up so it looks as though we have something up at the windows. I would not recommend the ones i have which are the same as on the link.

Does it have to be a pole? You could attach a rail to the ceiling and hang from there. Although not sure whether that would work with the cornicing. Our sitting room curtain rail is attached to the ceiling in our bay and the curtains hang ceiling to floor and look great. Just an idea.

Hi. I think you should be able to fit a pelmet. This is my house before we moved in which has the same issue. There's another window not in shot which actually reaches the ceiling rather than just a tiny gap. I've just got Roman blinds up now and want to add dress curtains later. I unfortunately don't know the names of the various fittings you can get for dress curtains though as have spent ages looking myself! You can get modern pelmets and they weren't too badly priced from memorŷ. I also spoke to a local curtain maker who could also make pelmets so it might be worth asking if you do like them if you want the fabric matched

Thank you Jen and Jonathan for your comments and suggestions - you’ve given me some important things to think about, especially with regards to heat-loss and seeking before and after valuations. I will definitely be reinstating the sash windows in the first floor. One of the houses further up, not pictured, has sash windows on both floors, and it looks by far the best of the row, so that is a third alternative I could consider, and is probably the most cost-effective of all the options.

Shutters are a classic, timeless look that goes well with various interiors. I found a few client photos with windows similar to yours. We had another client who opted for a boxed pelmet with pinch pleate curtains which could work with your window. It creates a very clean and elegnt look. Plus voiles for extra privacy but still allows light in. Similar but with a voile curtain To save on costs you can forgo the pelemt box, pinch pleats or eyelets look stylish as is.

Hi, I live in a Victorian house too with a bay - and had a similar dilemma. Someone on a forum recommended a company in Wales (I think!) that make lovely iron curtain poles - so that’s what we did, and we’ve never looked back!! The company have a (basic) website - it explains how to measure (you have to do several measurements which they then use to ensure a perfect fit!). The pole arrived as one solid piece that was bent at all the right places. We chose a gorgeous white with simple small white balls as the finals. You can choose different thicknesses of pole too. It’s attached to the wall with 3 fittings - one in the middle and one at each end. In theory we could have just two wide curtains on it, but in reality we chose to hang 4 curtains - one on each end and one in each corner to pull across the back. We went for white as we didn’t want the heavy look of the black poles - our house had those when we moved in and we wanted something a bit different and more neutral. We hung light white curtains to start with but currently have a heavy dark grey velvet. Both looked great with the pole as it’s very unobtrusive. I can’t remember the cost but I do remember it being cheaper than I was expecting - more than Ikea (!!) but less than John Lewis - and it’s totally bespoke and one one solid pole. They’re an ironwork forgery - and everything is made bespoke. Bespoke sounds expensive, but certainly a few years ago, it worked out way cheaper than even b and q!

They have instructions online - just choose your shape and then start measuring. You can choose different colours and finals, and the poles are available in two thicknesses. I went for white with a simple small ball on the ends - and several years on it still looks great!!!

Before I bought this, we had a bay pole from IKEA. It did the trick but was a bit rubbish because should have to measure and cut yourself. The one from the forgery comes as one solid piece and is far easier!

I bought my rail for my bay window from a curtain shop. It’s white metal and fits well in the bay window. They usually have a good range of rails/poles and they will fit them for you if you wish. Here’s a pic but sorry for the poor lighting.
