Magnet Kitchens

Can anyone tell me of their experience of Magnet kitchens. Have they lasted? I’m looking at the Tatton and read about some bubbling of the doors. Would be interested to hear your thoughts. I like the Tatton and Winchester. Any reviews?

Looking at the spec of the Tatton door, its a 5 piece door with a chipboard frame and mdf centre panel so i'd avoid that, the Winchester is a 5 piece mdf frame and centre panel, both these doors are pretty cheap. The prices on their website seem expensive for what you get, an 8 unit kitchen for over 2500.00, you could have painted wooden doors with colour matched rigid cabinets for less from one of our stock door ranges.

Hi WickesB&Q and the like are DIY stores that retail products to the end user. These retailers have to adhere to consumer law and your protection has to be covered directly by them as the retailer. Howdens on the other hand are a trade supplier. Which means that their customer (the builder or chippy) who supplies the end user has very little protection by consumer law. The end user is protected by consumer law and the builder or chippy the end user purchases the kitchen from has to adhere to the law as the retailer. I believe not many builders or chippys that purchase trade supplied kitchens and sell on to their customers fully understand this! There are other implications to this trade selling route to market also. Howdens in particular have a stellar high retail price then give 2 quotations to their customer, generally one with around 40% discount for the chippy to show their customer and then the 2nd quotation has a 70 to 80% discount on it! Now I'm not saying that all chippys just give the 40% discount quote to the customer and keep the rest, because in fact I believe that the vast majority give their full discount to their customer, the thing is the whole Howdens business model is set up for deception and to me this is just plain wrong! Anyway, this a side, Howdens range of cabinetry is similar to Wickes and B&Q as in terms of quality they are all bottom of the market with a very limited range of styles and finishes and units to choose from. If you go to the right Independent Kitchen Specialist you will get much better quality of kitchen, design and service, with a lot more choice of styles and finishes and proper advice on all aspects of your project. Just to weigh in on the Howdens comments, the key is to make sure you know someone in the trade who can put you forward to them, that way you just get dealt with as a trade using their account. They do have sales on but generally speaking the price doesn't fluctuate much through the year, except when they have their big sale on which is usually October time. I do use Howdens and no, they're not perfect but most of the grumbles I hear are more to with customer service which don't fall in line with the glossy showroom kitchen providers. The quality of the kitchens is very good (25 year warranty iirc) so if you have access to them then do get a quote from them. I think what I would say is that if you go to Howdens, expect a slightly tradesman type relationship (the showrooms are far from impressive) but a key thing is that they hold stock on most items. If you get a damaged door for example, it can be replaced next day, try getting that out of Homebase....... With regard to appliances, we have SMEG in our kitchen and I'd never buy it again. Hobbs been fine, but three new ovens on warranty and whilst it now works fine, the previous two didn't. Previously we had Bosch for everything and it all worked faultlessly, so I can't recommend them enough.

What colour tiles to go with this kitchen?

I think something that will warm up the scheme a little would be nice. MATH's copper tiles would work, also consider bricks, a textured mid grey tile would play the tone on tone but add more interest to the scheme, and even a patterned tile would work BUT you would need the scale of the design quite small. I feel the big bold designs will fight with the dark cabinets for attention a bit too much. You can definitely afford to play UP the the drama those dark cabinets offer as opposed to going for safer options and keep it plain and light. If going for pattern choose designs with warmer tones like taupes and grey not stark white and grey. Hope this helps and please let us know how it's progressing :)

Looking at the plan, i'm a bit concerned about the diagonal larder, on one side is an american fr/frz which will stick out and on the other side is an oven. The issue could be the larder doors hitting and possibly getting damaged by the fridge on one side, on the other is an oven that may have horizontal handles which also can damage the larder doors. The fr/frz is also going to look a bit rubbish with just a decor panel to the rh side as well [could do with a 300 larder next to it]. Also the magnet plan doesn't relate to your architects drawing at all, your oven towers are infront of the side window [old kitchen window] and the corner larder and fr/frz are infront of the utility doorway. There's also the new wall nib [old wall] and steel which isn't shown and you won't be able to have an oven tower infront of the nib unless you have extra deep cabinets which will make your sink run shorter. In the opposite corner, your corner base [No 5], is a blind corner and if you have a pull out fitted then you'll have easy access. TBH for 27k , you could get so much more and better design, more doors styles to choose from, bespoke painted, bespoke cabinets, more drawers [even oak drawer boxes] only see one set, i assume its a down draught extractor, quartz worktops, so i'd have a look at some independants.
