Island in a narrow kitchen

We are planning (I think) to knock a wall between the kitchen and dining room in our new house. The dining room leads onto a conservatory (with doors currently). We would love to have an island with seating for 4 or more as we use our current one all the time. But the room will be quite long and narrow. Are we going to be able to fit it in? Size of room knocked through will be 10m x 3.33m, there is a slight narrowing at one end (away from the conservatory) but I will likely put the dining table there or utility area.

Could anyone show me any examples or where to try out designs online please? Thanks so much!

If you mean units along the longer wall with an island opposite it, then yes you'd fit it in, but you wouldn't be able to put anything on the wall behind the island, just space for stools.

Yes thats what we thought just units on one side. I wasn’t sure of how it would look with the wall behind the island.

Hello, You could mount mirror to cupboard doors and this way you would have both you wanted to have. Remember that there is no project that can't be achieved and with a great design you can have what you desired for! Hi Laura, You've received many suggestions and some have been quite good. Particularly useful are the photos above of the French pied a terre with the slim line cabinets on one side. If you need somewhere to eat, you can swap the table and chairs for a bar and stools with slim cabinets either side. And don't worry about losing the panel radiator. Your plumber can install a hydronic plinth heater that connects into your central heating. I think the key to your colour scheme should start with your new cooker. Have you considered beige cabinet doors in high gloss? They would make your range look integrated and help reflect light around the room. Polished black granite (or laminate) worktop will pick up the black trim on the cooker. The arched lower door of the cooker points toward a more traditional or transitional look for a cooker hood (black) or an integrated hood. Beige and black tiles would keep the walls of the working area scrubbable. Look at metro tiles for a high gloss finish or patchwork tiles for some retro designs. Lastly, change over to LED lighting with warm white lamps. Avoid harsh white light overhead, but don't forget worktop lighting. Good luck and have fun.

The 2 windows are they same or being replaced by patio doors to garden? If so, which is a door? If not doors, I'd want the windows to be the same for cohesion in the space. Maybe a layout like this, banquet bench type dining area could maybe work?

This looks like a cute house! Do you have plans of the rest of the house? Seeing the entire house would help scale the different rooms. How big of a disadvantage is it to use a bedroom as an office? Can the office be semi-open? The window by the front door, how high is the bottom in relation to the floor? How keen are you to have a dining table instead of just island/peninsula seating? (For the most part, your dining table setups are too tight.) The tiny room behind the stairs - is that a closet? Entry to basement stairs? Any load-bearing walls? Are you removing the fireplaces? The main issue with your first and fourth plans is that you have three rooms sharing one circulation point. Imagine three people, one cooking, one doing laundry, and one coming and going from the office. That's a lot of traffic in that small path. I like the kitchen at the front of the house. This gives the best circulation. If you could have a kitchen counter against the wall with the front-facing window, even better. I would align the office door with the laundry door, and dedicate that whole wall to the left to washer/dryer/storage. Otherwise, I would keep the kitchen where it is, but move it to the other wall and add bifold/French doors like Jonathan suggested. From the bottom up: washer, dryer, (or stacked washer dryer), fridge, dishwasher, sink, and range. The front room could become the office.

It would fit but I’d be wary of adding a long Island in a long narrow room - I think it might visually make the room appear to be even longer and narrower. We have a similar width kitchen but only 8 metres in length. We have units both sides and decided to have a peninsula at right angles to the long wall which reduces the long corridor effect. Obviously not for everyone but thought I’d mention it as an alternative.

thank you I agree! I think we have decided to have a run of cabinets, small peninsula and then a separate island in an empty space beyond, I think it seems much better. I hate feeling crammed in!

The room is going to appear like a tunnel, proportions are wrong, the ratio really will look odd, comments are spot on, I would consider other layout options or possibly an extension if practical
