Thoughts on shared driveways?
Comments (10)We have recently bought a house which has shared access with another and a pedestrian right of way to an apartment complex. Irritatingly the concrete pathway to the apartments is on our side of the otherwise gravelled driveway. There are a line of birch trees down more or less the centre of the driveway. However our neighbour put in bollards on our side of the trees dividing the driveway, giving him a wider driveway than ours by about eighteen inches all the way down and he also painted the centre gate pillar at the entrance the same colour as his wall on the other side. The previous elderly owner of our house didn't object. Our neighbour refuses to remove the bollards, which look incredibly ugly, and we can't do anything about it legally as we stupidly bought the house with the bollards in situ. I don't want to start WW3 and our budget is very tight but I would dearly appreciate any ideas on how we could make the entrance look pretty. The pathway has to remain wheelchair friendly....See MoreWhat can i do with this patch at front of house/driveway ?
Comments (8)Thanks Rachel and Ribena, I’d never heard of Heuchera before but the colours look stunning so will definitely look into those some more. I thought a pic oft back garden might be helpful to give an idea of the type of look I’d like to introduce in this front area. Since this pic was taken I have 6 bays planted in the L section on the left with dwarf box hedge establish in that full section also. So really quite minimalist....See MorePaving colour for driveway - To match or not to match?
Comments (138)These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire....See MoreHaving a new driveway
Comments (19)Well it's all done - and I'm over the moon with the finished result. I managed to get some photo's when they left on Saturday afternoon, which was the last time I saw it before it was covered by a deep layer of snow. He did lay some hessian sheets over the collar at the front, so that the temperate would stay above freezing to speed up the setting of the grouting. The front grass now needs a lot of work - but that can definitely wait until the spring now. I need to lay a couple of slabs by the wall to put the bins - where we'll also get some bin storage thingies so that you don't see them. I'm not fussed in the slightest about 'weeds' - ask me again in the spring/summer then I may have changed my mind, but filling a watering can with some industrial strength weed killer and going over the drive a couple of times a year is no biggie. Besides I'm planning on raking it over every now-and-then so I'll just couple those together. I understand that there will be some upkeep to it, but isn't that the case with just about everything these days. Not sure what the next job will be, but I'm sure that the Mrs has something on the horizon. We're getting a new boiler fitted tomorrow, so I'm guessing that 'The Utility Room' will be having a re-design at some point in the new year. But that's all from me for the time being....See MoreNL B
