How do I make the open plan work with the pillars

I’m looking to have an extension but because of a previous extension the open plan is limited by the need for pillars , how do I integrate the pillars into the design without looking like a big pillar and have a kitchen island.

I’m worried about flow? Any ideas on what I can do?

Have you seen dazzle camouflage?

The concept is don't try to hide it - emhpasise it - massive rich colours - emphasise its purpose, holding the ceiling up.

If its obvious what it's doing it may stick out less than a 'samey' paint job?

You could also build joinery around pillar to make a storage for example and then dress the shelves with decor or books. I have done this on multiple projects and it works really well to make the same feel more open :)

I would suggest that the living room remains seperate and that perhaps internal doors are replaced with half glass doors so that they are more welcoming - as we have dogs with wet noses! we tend to keep glass on the upper half of the door only! Keeping the living room seperate will give you and your wife an adult area that you can disappear to when children have friends round in later years.... And also means you will have an area that is free from cooking smells etc for guests to walk into. I would move the door from the hall back into line with the existing wall of the kitchen to dinning room so as to get rid of that small little entrance from hall to kitchen. I would then knock down the dinning room to kitchen wall to have this as open plan with an island in the middle - with islands I would not recommend having it as your kitchen 'wet area' - I see this a lot in magazines but does after all mean that the main focal point of the kitchen becomes the kitchen sink and its dirty dishes!!! Instead I would have a hob etc on the island so that you can cook on that and eat on the other side of the island perhaps on a curved top. I would keep the toilet where it is but just loose a small corridor area between it and the kitchen for boots coats etc... thus separating toilet from kitchen. I have done similar to this in my home and it works a treat - love the fact that we have a seperate lounge (our sanctuary!) and a regular living space as well.

Hi Adrian . I’m just on a coffee break - but saw your post - if you have a three story building ( or more) then you need to protect your stairway so that would stop you opening into the hallway. So the only opening up part you could do is the wall between kitchen and lounge. There are designers ( like us ) who do this kind of work with clients -getting designs right to suit you . We are looking for the same type of tiles to use on the wall of the sink. The whole bathroom will be a toned down yellow (that's the idea for now) and a secluded shower area - turquoise. The idea is to make it Spanish style, ao there will be a lot of dark wood wood (beams, mirror, sink plank, maybe some more planks, wooden door), some old school wall lights. Shower head and tap are supposed to be bronze color, the old school type. And we'll have plants hanging and standing around. Only not sure about the floor tiles yet. My husband wants it all in pebbles, but i'm not sure it will look nice

Use the flat, living room, side to hang a TV - the other side would be fine with tall kitchen units or built in decorative shelves as suggested previously. It will be a great space when it’s done.
