Water-damaged bathroom skirting?

Hi everyone!

I noticed a new series of brownish stains on the skirting board between the sink and toilet in my bathroom.

I'm not sure what is the problem. Is it just water damage from splashes from the sink? Or something more serious?

Should I replace the skirting all together?

you got boys in the house, its a kind of water damage, should be able to bleach it clean

Are these new? You can have a small leak from the pan or connector so try to find the source of the leak before you spend time fixing it up. You may be able to scrub it up and repaint if the skirting is not too wet / damaged already

One possible solution. It gives you the bath and shower in one unit behind the door away from the window as well as the sink and WC of course. Admittedly a little tight on plan at the end of the shower bath but your upper body and arms would be free to move over the end of the bath and into the window recess, and your feet, whether standing or sitting, would always be in front of the WC where you have more space. The sink has plenty of space around it with room for a towel rail adjacent. The sanitary where is all taken from the Ideal Standard website but you could use any manufacturer - the point is it can be done. I would also make the glazing obscure, if it is not already, by using an after market stick on film cut to size. You can get plenty of patterns or just frosted. You could also add blinds as previously suggested. Note: any proposed layout could be affected by the proximity of your existing foul water drainage - just bear that in mind.

Hi thimblehall As Sort Our Stuff mentioned, you can buy tongue and groove panels made of moisture resistant mdf from most hardware/building supplies stores. It works well in bathrooms and should be fine if painted in an eggshell paint. I have a tongue and groove bath panel and have had no issues with water damage. Hope this helps! Jennifer

Hi Jen, good idea re the laundry - it would nicely "segregate" that functional space and open up all the rest as bathroom space. If you go that route, just check with a plumber that you don't cause any knock on issues with running a soil pipe from the back of the WC to the main soil stack (you really don't want those issues!!), and then make sure you do it in a way that doesn't lose light from that window. Regarding custom mirrors - the cheapest way is to get a local glazier to quote to make and install. Assuming it is just a single plain sheet you are looking for, the cost should not be too bad at all. Definitely get the glazier to install - it pays to leave the risk on their side, and they are experienced in handling the material. I've had a few bespoke glass splashbacks go "pop" on me, and there are few worse feelings... For what is a relatively piece of glass, make sure that there are no access issues to get it into the room (awkward bends round stairs or the like), or consider doing it in a couple of pieces. And if you are concerned about getting the best price, ask a couple of people to quote and look online too. And don't be afraid to haggle nicely - any glazier will try and squeeze a little extra margin if they can, so try and get it back! What you’ll likely find, however, when you take up an old bathroom floor is wooden panels. So why aren’t people using what they’ve got? Why has there been a movement towards using tiles and vinyl when there’s a perfectly good floor waiting to be used. Are people still scared of using wooden flooring in the bathroom? We’re here to tell you it’s time to embrace the natural flooring and let the wood shine! Many years ago when it became increasingly popular to rip out carpets and install wood flooring throughout homes one piece of information spread like wildfire: water and wood don’t mix. As a result, placing woowden flooring in the bathroom was avoided. But how much of this is true? This theory no doubt spread as a result of fear of the high levels of humidity found in bathrooms as well as water splashing onto wooden surface. People were concerned their new flooring would be irreparably damaged and quickly! But so long as you choose the right products and take the right precautions wood flooring in the bathroom is now not only achievable but also a great way to add a natural material to the design. To make your wood floor dreams come true we’re going to need to get technical for a minute. To deal with the humidity factor you’re going to need Engineered Wood Flooring preferably 140-150mm wide. Finishing wise you can choose whichever you like, there are no specialist finishes that add extra stability. Lacquers will be low maintenance whereas wax gives a higher level of protection but also requires a good deal of elbow grease to maintain. Note that it is worth having a good layer of actual wood as the top layer on the floor and to be meticulous in your maintenance with such a product. Certain woods like Teak are impervious to water and immune to rot. These can even be used to create shower trays, seats as well as other flooring areas. Wooden flooring in the bathroom is nothing new but with an increase, in quality and affordability, it has become more and more popular. Just as with tiles you can add pattern through your choice of woods or in the way that the wood is laid out. You can also paint wood to introduce colours and patterns making wood flooring a great way to create a classic look but can just as easily be used to give a sense of modernity.
