What would deter you from buying a house?
Comments (35)We bought our house 15 years ago with an open mind but wanting some minimum basics - white bathroom suite and separate loo, kitchen / diner or scope to have one, 4 bedrooms, large - preferably bay - window for Christmas tree and a cat-flap. We got a Victorian fixer-upper - 5 bedrooms, a space for a kitchen diner (had to move some plumbing and gas into it and convert old kitchen into utility), lovely 11ft high ceilings, gorgeous tall bay window, cat-flap into the utility, wood-burning stove - on the road parking (oops) and it was in local guide books and sometimes a walk-around tour! I walked into the place with an open mind and immediately loved the atmosphere, it felt like home. High ceilings and off the road parking would be priorities next-time though, we love our high ceilings and everyone who visits us does too....See MoreWhat lounge layout? Buying sofas this weekend!
Comments (7)If it is definitely more of a snug I'd go for a long sofa opposite the fire, probably a chaise as it may be be more comfy for tv viewing. A window seat would look good and lovely for reading etc. If you're doing bookcases, consider matching but with a shelf left out for the tv. If there's room i might then add a couple of small accent chairs angled in front of the bookcase. If you were to use it formally (I know you said not) but would go for 2 sofas opposite each other at right angles to the fire with the tv opposite the fire. As Tavolla said, do measure carefully! It's good to draw everything to scale or cut out paper templates...See MorePlease Help! Can you help improve the most complicated layout ever?
Comments (4)I'd do exactly as Jonathan has done on the ground floor. The first floor can be re-configred in a miriad of ways depending on whom you wish to afford it to ie;- The boys and the Nanny, I'd still try for 3 bed, and En-Suite and a main bathroom. I think that whomever is using it, then you'll need an En-Suite either for yourselves or your Nanny. So something like this may work well. The loft is a whole different kettle of fish. 2 metres is okay - you can stand up in there. I'd certainly get rid of the pointless utility room and turn it over to storage as you have 3 boys, you're bound to need quite a bit. It's possible that you could re-arrange the entrance slightly and donate the long thin area over to a playroom, giving them more space to play indoors....See MoreCan anyone please help improve this layout?
Comments (9)He gave the architect a list of what he wanted, but he isn’t keen on what the architect has produced. He likes the loft layout but thinks the downstairs & the first floor designs seem limited. He doesn’t like the W/C at the bottom of the downstairs extension. He also wants his daughter to have the en-suite but the layout doesn’t seem to work. He isn’t sure if moving the stairs would improve the layout of the whole of the house....See MoreAnita Beynon
