Online Architect or Traditional ?

Hi there, what are peoples thoughts on using (im going to call them new modern tech style) 'Online' architects - some survey your home, some ask you to do it or pay for a measured survey V a traditional Service.

Pros/Cons???

I am considering a single rear extension and some internal remodeling

Traditional approach is best as it's hand on and will address any issues and needs that are requested
Also this relationship can be fruitful in acquiring talented and expert builders with solid history of craftsmanship, thereby making the project less arduous.

Hi Andrew!

Good question.

I've worked as a traditional architect running my own practice specialising in helping homeowners with house extensions since 2009, but since 2020 I've been working almost exclusively online. I do the measured survey when my clients are local, but I've been working with clients all over the country as a result of being online and then it's necessary to get a local surveyor to do the measure.

I've found that this way of working really helps many people. Especially people who are now working from home and can more easily fit the design meetings via video call into their working day. Plus I'm no longer driving and even flying to see my clients anymore, which is good for the environment as well as better for my clients because the time I used to spend travelling I now spend designing.

Many architects employed in big companies don't get to see the building they're working on in real life so it's not that weird though people think it is. As long as we have plans and photos we can understand the space really well.

I once designed a flagship jewelery shop fit out in Milan while I was living and working in Barcelona. Dealing with the different languages was a struggle (Italian, and Catalan - google translate was well used) but the plans and the photos were more than adequate!

D&B is certainly a much easier route but like you said you pay for it. You might save a bit going traditional, the issue there is more the hassle of project managing than having one point of contact. You can go down the traditional route if you are prepared to and able to manage the project. Having said that some architects do include coordinating their designs with the builder within their services. Might be worth getting quotes for architects and traditional builders to compare with the D&B to help make an informed decision. Another option a lot of people don't consider is having a cost/project manager. For a reasonable fee they can help you with your budget and manage the project, saving you a lot of hassle. That’s just what I’m saying .... I wouldn’t let my builder choose my taps. Some choices need to be made solely by you because everyone’s opinion is different. I presume you’ve already chose a builder from what you’ve said. There are builders out there who work as Project Manager too. My husband does it and is currently doing something very similar to what you describe His current Contract is around £80k so a lot or work involved with walls coming down, RSJs going in, flooring, new kitchen. He has advised his customer and led them in the right direction but personal choices such as light fittings and kitchen fascias have been made by them. In short what I’m saying is you choose your more personal items and let the builder offer his experience for the construction side of things.

The IKEA one is good. I used it to plan my kitchen, but I didn't order from IKEA. You can do it in 2D but it will also produce 3D rendering.
