Large Master bedroom suite - a lovely problem to have…?

Hi - we’ve just moved into a large Victorian 4-storey villa that’s crying out to be bought into the 21st century (sympathetically of course).

Our very large master bedroom has no en-suite, (a must in the 20’s), so we are going to knock into the adjoining bedroom and use this space as a en-suite bathroom/dressing room, but are struggling to come up with a design, mainly because the rooms are so large. Our bedroom is 21 x 21 ft, the adjoining room is 15 x 15ft. Any suggestions?

I love the above suggestion. Alternatively the first half of the second room could be the dressing area through which you walk through to access the large bathroom suite. Bathroom is best kept where the window is.

I love creating spaces like this because it can be a real haven and escape for some people having their their private dressing area and ensuite!

Make sure your dressing area is really well lit, if not custom joinery joinery could create something fab with IKEA pax sets. Just make the flooring really plush and soft and have some really nice seating In there.

I would also deffo create a seating area in the bedroom too maybe by the window..

Hi I love the warm caramel colour on the walls! I think I would try to create an eye piece I.e softer headboard in maybe a tonal colour to the walls. I would also have a built in storage area where you have the chests in the triangular area, to maximise space/storage. A focal point would encourage the eye away from the window. As the space behind pillow area is limited, a bespoke/DIY headboard would work. I will look for photos, sorry I've not attached any yet. It's a good space to work with and the bed could be layered to look elegant and inviting.

Depends what they want the third bedroom for. If an office space 2 singles may be fine. If a guest room would a single work? Could they knock the 2 bedrooms together to make 2 decent doubles?

I like Jonathon’s first drawing for a couple of reasons. You can have a walk in wardrobe for all the hanging clothes, which can end up looking a bit messy, and have the more traditional type of wardrobe for items that can be boxed up, such as handbags and shoes, and folded clothes / drawer items. I think a walk in wardrobe is better without a window as natural light can fade clothes, so much better to have a bright bathroom with 2 windows. Finally, as you’re building the internal walls from scratch you could look into having a pocket door system into the en suite thereby preventing a swinging door getting in the way of either the wardrobe or the shower.

Thanks for all your replies - I really appreciate it. We do currently need all four bedrooms as we have 3 children. Whether it is our forever home really depends on how much we can expand. It is a semi detached 1930s property. The current owners have already extended to the side to create a fourth bedroom downstairs and have extended to the rear for a bigger kitchen. We are hoping to eventually extend on top of the current side extension - I'm guessing if we did that we could make bedroom four bigger and build in to it to create the en-suite? Haha, Jonathan beat me to it, I had a similar layout open from last night :)

First of all make sure the floor joists are strong enough for a bathtub. I placed the bath along the right wall, with large plants in front of the window. Large towel radiator next to the toilet. Behind the bed an office area.

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. I love the suggestion to bring the bed forward and to utilise the space behind for either an office or wardrobe area. I think we’ll do a combo of all three suggestions. I’ll post the final design once we’ve drawn it up. Thank you
