Master Bedroom Air Vent

Hello!
we have been plastering and renovating our master bedroom. On the wall shown we will have a mural running from the left of the photo all the way to the right. At the top right, we have this air vent. This used to be an external wall for the house, but the previous owners built a dressing room and en-suite bathroom behind this wall. As a result, I am not sure whether the vent is working or not (although it does seem to pull air).
Do you think it is possible to remove all together and plaster behind it back to a smooth surface? or replace with a different air vent cover? Are there alternatives to the air vent if functional?
