Hello again!! Just short of 2 years later, my den is finally finished and looks pretty much like how I've envisaged it. Few months ago, I was extremely lucky to meet this carpenter who is really good and doesn't mind building my 'designs' :)) and we got to work. After finishing the hall and main bedroom (http://www.houzz.co.uk/projects/723044/hall / [https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/colour-for-unit-top-dsvw-vd~2977620[(https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/colour-for-unit-top-dsvw-vd~2977620)) we finally started on my den. As you'll notice, in planning the space, I've used a mixture of your ideas above: it has a secret door, a (folding) desk, it's a bit of an art gallery and has a few other surprises! The initial plan had to be altered to accommodate my new hobby :)). Almost one year ago, I had this mad idea to start painting (on) glass and then to make silly clay figurines, so I adapted the space to suit my pursuits (like the slightly tilted shelves for paints, peg board for scissors, top shelf for expo, etc). Plus, you can't really tell which of the panels are in fact secrets doors!! As for the rest, I bought a rubber mat to protect the oak floor and I'm using a trolley for the rest of the materials, so it can easily be moved out the way in case we need access to the back. Carpenter insisted on the LEDs, I'm not that keen on them. So, ignoring the arty-farty clutter, what do you think of my space?

I work full time from home although I do travel to visit clients from time to time as required. The room I use was meant to be a dining room - though it is too small to be a proper dining room. It is only 9 feet by 17 feet and has 2 doors (kitchen and living room access) taking up valuable wall space. Luckily in my industry I don't need too much in the way of filing cabinets, so just 2 do the job. I have 2 desks in there plus a number of other basic office style cabinets I bought flat pack years ago. The room also has to house my tools (a lot) and I tend to keep my bicycles in there too, which I shouldn't as it makes it overcrowded. There is a store for the bicycles but it isn't convenient to use. If I have visitors then I either put the bicycles away in advance or we use the living room, which is more common. My wife works in an office and our son is grown up and not living here, so no clashes there. For most of my work I simply need a notebook on wifi and a mobile phone but the office has a couple of pcs, a multipurpose all in one colour laser printer and a shredder. The second desk is used as a work bench when working on stuff that needs testing and/or repairing. I deal in high tech small equipment. No stock is held, which is good for cash flow and for keeping security risks down. I love working from home due to convenience. I deal with companies all around the world so working from home means I can leave off and when I need to connect in real time to people the other side of the world I just walk back through into the office again and everything is there. To me that is better than having an office and then either having to go back there for a 10pm video call or have it from home and find the details I need are in the office. What I dislike is the lack of company. It can be lonely working from home. My wife works in a large company and they have all sorts of facilities for the staff. Gym, squash courts, room for health classes (yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Qong etc.), cafeteria and so on. They also have all sorts of clubs and other team activities. I miss that side of office life, but then not many get to work in such large office communities. The setup works for me but I don't think working at home would suit everyone. You have to know yourself quite well before making the change.

Home office in the master bedroom -- ok or no-no?

Could your children share a bedroom? You could then use the smallest one for a home office. I think that's what I'd do, in the short term. Tricky if the children are already teenagers and thus near adult size and used to their own personal space, but you mentioned toys, so I'm thinking they're young and therefore adaptable/will be fine with whatever you decide, after a potential minor strop initially. We have friends who live in a very large 5 bed house (like 4500 sq feet); their children all chose to share a room for years, despite them all actually having their own bedroom suites. Two girls and a boy. Girls are now teenagers and in their own rooms.

John Gauld Photography - clearly a man after my own heart there looking at your office. We are in different business areas on different continents but share a kinmanship in the way our office contents fully fill the room to overflowing. I do applaud SlidingWardrobeSolutions optimistic belief that a wardrobe like structure could contain it all. In my case I suspect sliding warehouse solutions would be more appropriate. I deal in technical safety and rescue equipment so samples take up space, as do things in for service, filing cabinets for records (most of this stuff requires licenses, periodic record keeping and so forth), more filing cabinets for brochures and manuals, a service and repair desk for stuff that can get inside the room (some has to be done at the customer's location due to equipment size) and basically spares, tools and odds and ends. This is not an office to work from instead of going to a main office, it is THE office. I find that if I put everything away (I have managed to do so a few times) much of it suffers. We are in the tropics, so air conditioning is required at times. Not wanting to run it 24/7 due to costand environmental concerns means that humidity and temperature levels change wildly (a cold drink here has to be stood in a saucer because after 5 minutes there will be almost a second drink due to condensation on the outside of the glass.) Tropics = a minimum of 65% humidity at any time and shade temperatures up to the very high 30's centigrade. Glossy brochures tend to stick together in a big lump. Many pieces of equipment and components have to be kept in sealed bags - looks ugly. The cabinet I stand the colour laser printer/scanner/copier on has a tendency to get mold on one side - the result of the printer's air circulation! This was made worse due to a water leak in the wall from next door for almost 2 years (cured over 2 years ago now). It got under the laminate floor via the edge. Luckily when I fitted it I had been very careful with the foam and plastic sheet underlay so the laminate is okay, but I suspect trapped water is still slowly being drawn out. It is the coolest and darkest room in the house so it is taking time. Part of the living room suffered the same from the same leak but is completely fine now - more space and ventilation and warmer when not in use, so now all dried out from under the floor (same laminate throughout downstairs except for kitchen and bathroom.) I do a lot of work on my notebook and as it has an 8 to 9 hour battery that means the house is my office. I'm typing this as a break from work at the moment and I'm sat on the sofa nicely reclined for comfort.
