Living Room from scratch!

Hi all!

Just moved into a renovated property and want to do a romantic earthy natural vibe in the living room, to compliment the big open doors and the fact we live in the countryside.

We will keep the furniture, we will also buy more.

I’m unsure how to make my idea come to life?

I’ve got dark wood furniture, we will also have a darker wood dining table in the empty space & the kitchen worktops are wood to hopefully keep a flowing theme.

I thought about this colour - Peignoir by Farrow and Ball - allowing the dark wood and grey sofa to stand out, with pink/terracotta soft furnishings.

Any ideas, pieces, colours, furniture to suggest? Absolutely open to ideas!

Hi Kara,

Congratulations on your move! I'm sure you will have lots of fun bringing your ideas to life in your new home. Looking at your photos, my first step would be to hone in on the exact colour palette you would like to use so that you can create a cohesive plan. I have a blog post which helps people to work out if they are drawn to Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter colours, which might be helpful to you? After you have the colour palette defined, I would think about how to 'zone' your space, as there are some very large, open areas, which are gorgeous but may not help you to create the homely vibe you are perhaps looking for? After that, I'd recommend lots of pinning images on Pinterest so that you can start to see what it is exactly in each image that you like and which styles you are drawn to. This should help you to further define your design style.

Hi emham, there's nothing wrong with a little beige here and there but too much can certainly 'wash out' the character of a room. Don't feel you have to overcompensate by using bold colours or patterned feature walls; it may feel dated within a few years and we humans get bored quickly so giving a room the flexibility to change every six to 12 months without a great deal of expense will give you much more satisfaction. If you are set on painting the walls then perhaps consider an 'antique' or 'off-white'; with good ambient lighting I find these are always the warmest colours. If you're going to go bold then keep the upper part white above the picture rail, its less oppressive on the mind! Gloss the woodwork, freshen u[p the plaster covings and let the period features speak for themselves. For a real burst of colour hang paintings, add textured cushions and throws on the furniture and add a bit of natural warmth with plants .. lots of green plants. A 'soft' central feature light with the correct energy efficient lighting can change the room's ambiance, along with wall lights, table and floor lamps. Depending on your budget, you could strip the carpet back and hope for a wooden floor beneath, but if you haven't the time or budget for installing a reclaimed wood floor, adding a colourful rug over the top of your carpet will do just as well and you could always replace the fabric window blinds with natural wooden shutters for that natural wood feel. You may also consider re-installing the Victorian fireplace! Keep creative and have fun.

Hello Toniann, Yes you could "Map" out the room and where you see items of furniture in the space... Think about what you like and want to put in it! Do you want a complete change? Or do you intend to integrate existing furnishings into the room for example. Think about how you use the space too as this might suggest to you how and what you need to put in it.. So it's working out what you like and what you need... I offer design, consulting, styling, and procurement should you wish to hire.. Without a picture it's hard to suggest with any real focus on things and schemes.. Sit in the space and mull it over for a bit... Maybe move round what is already in situ and see how spatially this changes the feel of the room... Lighting and window treatments can also play a big part in an overall look.. : ))

When you’ve spent a long time deciding which is the perfect wooden floor for you, you’ll want to keep it looking good for as long as possible. Unfortunately, opportunities to get scratches in your floor are plentiful, but can seriously detract from the overall effect. A beautiful wooden floor with an ugly scratch mark isn’t always easily fixed either – with a solid wood floor you can always sand down the top layer of the wood and refinish it (although this is a big undertaking and not a quick fix), but for laminate flooring this isn’t even an option – you’ll have to live with it or replace it. In this case, prevention definitely is better than cure, so here are a few easy ways to keep your wooden floor protected from scratches. Footwear Protect your wooden floor from scratches by being mindful of your footwear when you walk over it. Boots and high heels are the worst culprits for leaving scratches and indentations in your floor, so you should always get into the habit of removing your shoes when you come home. Obviously, you can’t expect guests to remove their shoes when they come into your home, so having area rugs or runners in high traffic areas can help to prevent some damage. Never walk over your newly re-varnished floor in anything other than fluffy socks for at least 24 hours after it has drie Felt pads on furniture Moving furniture around to redecorate, clean or make room for new pieces (or a Christmas tree in December), can result in scratched floors. The solution – add felt pads to the bottom of your heavy furniture to prevent deep scores. These felt pads are easy to apply and last for ages – and they’re extremely cheap so it’s a simple and extremely effective way to prevent unsightly damage to your wooden floor. Hi minnie101 The TV is 32” but Mr LTS wants to get a new one for in there. We don’t use the room very much currently, it needs revamping but the kids sometimes use it when they want to watch different things on TV (we have 3: front room, playroom & extension) or read, etc. Mr LTS & I hardly ever go in there, we live in the extension as it is toasty with UFH & cool with air con...it’s a dilemma as we have no idea if we will use the front room much at all but need to update it so can’t do nothing. The fire is awful, the composite got burnt when the wind blew down the chimney. I like the pic you posted...from the window wall to the door it is 2.15m...am hoping once it looks nice in there we will want to use the room. Fingers crossed!
