How to design the upstairs to be a better layout

We have an old house with an upstairs layout with lots of small rooms and corridoors. we are looking to make it more usable and update. We are considering an extension. We would also like a family bathroom and en suite. Many thanks

Hi Jackie, thank you for posting!

I see the space becoming more usable and fresh as your house has a great potential so I don't see why you coudn't get what you are wishing for.

Could you please upload another picture of your floor plan? The size of the image is too small and I can't read the texts. Thank you!

I didn't care for either of the layouts. Can't stand bedrooms where one side of the bed is right against the wall: makes making the bed a pain; requires someone to crawl over the other to get out on the side, or get out crawling down to the end; and just plain doesn't look nice.

I guess you could have the window replaced and build the wall up to the right height with a smaller window. You'd need to check planning on that though and how that affects the exterior of the house as it may mean that window then won't be in line with others in the house.

You've got your mind made up already, am I right? So mostly for fun I puzzled to get some beds and closets in there, plus 4 somewhat functional ensuites. Room 1 is the master bedroom, with a double sink and shower, plus a decent amount of closet space. Room 2 and 3 for the kids, perhaps one bathroom with a tub. And room 4 could be a guest room or a study.

With the space you have available the easiest thing to do would be to take some of the landing space into the bathroom, split that into an ensuite for the larger rear bedroom and a main bathroom accessed from the landing. Then move the partition wall between the two front bedrooms and make them more similar in size. As long as this doesn't involved structural work this should be relatively easy. You won't get an extra bedroom but you'll get a better range of bedrooms and an ensuite. You could possible add a little more space into the rear bedroom when you reconfigure the bathroom as well to make this a better sized master bedroom, or add in a wardrobe space.

Hi Jackie,

thank you for posting a new picture.

You have different options here, see below:

Option 1 - using the current bathroom (blue room) as family bathroom and creating an ensuite in bedroom 2.

Option 2 - Having bedroom 4 as ensuite (together with the current bathroom) and building a wall in the middle of bedroom 2 so you can accommodate a family bathroom.

Option 3 - Have you considered having the study in the eaves storage ? this would give you another empty space to work with.

I would say that everything depends on the use you want to do of the space, have you chosen which bedroom you will use? What about the other bedrooms, what will it be their purpose? Perhaps guest bedroom or something else?

Thanks for your ideas - it helps to have options. we were trying to open up bedroom 4 as the 2 kids have taken the other 2 rooms
