student interior designer

Hello,

I’ve just started my interior design course after just moving to a lovely Arts and Crafts home to give me idea how to do it and as well as looking to hopefully work as an assistant in interior design which I’m absolutely passionate about.

I’m trying to start putting theory into practice (not easy) but I’ll give it a go. As it’s an expensive way to train myself and I’d feel more comfortable working on this project with an expert advice, I’d love to hear from you amazing artists interior designers for tips, ideas how do I start my living room (pictures below). Ps: furniture are subject to be replaced.

I’d really appreciate your time, tips, advice and will be very grateful for it.

Ps: If you have an apprenticeship/internship role as an interior designer assistant in North Somerset, I’d love to hear from you as I’m currently looking for an apprenticeship/internship interior designer assistant role.

I have a degree in business studies but am focussing now on restarting my career (after time out for child care) in an area for which I have a real passion.

hiya congrats to start with for getting back into things and going with a career your passionate about it helps so much if you love what you do. So before dragging out the paint samples and everything else start how you would with a real client, look at the room and decide what you want from it, is it space is it comfort? if its a family home does it need to have storage for toys, does the furniture need to be easy to clean (im a mum of 3 and cleaned plenty og playdoh out of rugs and cushions) once you know the answer it gives you a starting point to work with. hope this helps, feel free to pop me a message if you need anything

I’m also mum of 3 little ones :) and yes makes sense thinking about how the space would work for family and their everyday needs. I’ll start planning and will send it to you to see your thoughts if that’s ok.

I have noticed that lots of small town stations were built with highly decorative features such as brickwork, colonnades, and canopy’s which have fallen into disrepair or been removed (often in the 1960s). Often the priority is now practical considerations such as parking provision which means often there is no landscaping or decoration that would be the norm of other public buildings. Also they were built before cars were available so driving in and parking is often haphazard. They often seem to be foreboding places at night too. Of course there are examples were none of these things are true such as Kings Cross. So if I were a resident near a railway station I would hope that any plans increased investment on the site- perhaps bringing in other businesses such as hotels, bars and restaurants to improve the ambiance especially at night- I can think of stations where there are attached but underused buildings that could be connected which in turn could generate increased rail use in the quieter evening which in turn would help improve profitability and eventually rail fares. It occurs to me that if the objective is to also improve local pride then perhaps there should be some civic areas to draw in children (such as rooms that can be used for the Cubs, the Guides the sea cadets etc). Getting children involved with something has been shown to discourage antisocial behaviour towards the area in their later adolescence. Assuming there is room it might even be possible to have a prayer room and build associations with local religious community’s who in turn may be able to offer support for homeless people who also find themselves at stations. Perhaps there are lessons to be learned from Airports and hospitals in this regard. Given that these are often city centre sites the road traffic would also need to be considered for pedestrians safety- one solution might be to have public transport in one area and private cars in another with traffic lights or roundabouts planned to safely let traffic on to the town centre roads. I would love to see available and reasonably priced parking in safe underground and multi storey car parks with dry walkways to the platforms to help make regular rail travel more affordable. From an aesthetic point of view I would love to see good quality lighting that is not too harsh. It would also be good if the site could include trees which would soften the buildings and improve noise pollution. It would be good if the platforms, conveniences and waiting rooms were cleaner and better appointed and perhaps dedicated areas for retail or advertising could help pay for these upgrades. It occurs to me that tannoy announcements are often intelligible as they try to fill the entire complex with news to supplement information that is already on display screens- perhaps the station experience would be better if these announcements were limited to certain areas such as platforms and restrooms.

Hello Adedayo, Looks like you have some exciting times ahead! I can't see much furniture in the rooms. Have you done a more detailed plan with them to work out exactly what you need in the rooms, to work out if the rooms are the right sizes? I would be reluctant to advise putting your utility into the office. There are a few reasons for this but it depends on what you are including - if you would like a sink it may look out of place and if you use your washer and dryer during the day, that may become annoying in terms of noise, heat or damp etc whilst working? ...I usually do a very in-depth brief before getting started on doing layouts - this is how you determine what to put where so you can ensure you get the best use of space and avoid costly mistakes. I do agree about the main hallway and keeping that circulation space, this is a must so I would definitely keep working on it. It looks like one of the two living rooms could be altered slightly to add this extra room. I would work on - opening the hallway, moving the utility to the (current) office (so it can accessed from the kitchen) and then moving the office into a newly created room once you know the space required from your living rooms. A concept planner or interior designer would be able to look at the layout on this sort of level for you. We look at things like furniture and how you use the space far more than architects so you can feel more confident in a room's specific layout and size. We can then of course, also help with all the other areas as needed - like colour, lighting plans etc so it's worth getting one of board at this time in the process. hiya thats no problem. Its the best way to start some of the projects as it narrows down so many areas for things like furniture and paint types especially with kids as youll want paint that wipes and wall paper thats thicker and furniture thats probably not white if its fabric etc. okay no problem ill get back to you as soon as
