Advice needed on painting over peeling paint please?

Hi all, first time poster here. Please be kind :-)

I recently moved into a new property and I want to paint a single wall in my room. While plugging some holes left by the previous owner the old paint is peeling off in large pieces.

Not sure on next steps. Do I peel all the old paint off? Do i sand it down and paint over, hoping for the best?

I would want to know why the paint has peeled off in such a large area initially. Is there damp behind it?

Hi Daisy, thank you for answering :-)

The wall doesn’t ’feel’ damp, but the apartment has other areas of damp throughout so it’s likely damp there too.

Two coats of Zinsser 123 primer/undercoat. You might not even need to sand it before you begin, the primer sticks to anything so you don't really need a key. Only sand at the start if the current surface is a bit knackered. Sand in between coats with a 240 grit/superfine sand paper. Top coat, get the best paint you can afford, a trade paint is recommended. Go to a decorators merchants and ask them. Though any trade paint for interior wood would do, egg shell, mid sheen, whatever finish you like. Two coats of this, sand in between with the superfine. If you can be bothered try rollering the majority of the paint on, with a mini roller suitable for the paint your using. If done right it gives a good finish. Cut in any of the detailing, edges with a brush. Sounds like a lot to do but its pretty simple really.

Never heard of a local garage spraying to be honest but as a side note to consider is removing your door a good idea? - security - drying times - door may drop and need adjusting - transportation I would clean the door down with some soapy water, really get in the corners etc make sure it is throughly dry. Remove all items which can come off such as letter box, eye hole etc Brush one coat of shellac Zinnser onto the door, starting with the panels. Leave approximately one hour - it is important that if the paint builds up in areas that it is allowed to dry throughly as and this is very important - if it doesn't dry completely, the 2nd coat can reactivate the first coat. Very light sand down Apply 2nd coat Undercoat if it's a colour Top coat, gloss etc Try and do it on a very hot day as its a lot of coats and you want door shuttable etc

Yes you can. To be honest, I slap the zinsser on and then two coats of really good undercoat and sand that. I always use Rustins undercoat which is water based and then if possible go over with oil based top coat. Others may have other recommendations for which undercoat. I find the people at Brewers are generally really helpful as they are constantly dealing with trade customers. I bought this tool on a recommendation and it is really useful for defluffing the edges of painted mdf. My house was full of conker brown varnish and I painted over veluxes with zinsser and it really works. It stinks (contains meths) and it with ruin the brushes but it's good stuff.

I’m not so bad at mind numbing work as I find it quite therapeutic. After discussing it earlier I walked past the top (which is actually in the bedroom and not a landing staircase ie it’s an attic room) and used the chisel lying on the floor to ataty scraping some off. Comes off very easily so I will just do a bit each day on the handrails and posts (leaving the spindles as they are mostly intact so will lightly sand) and I can sand it all when we move out :0) Thanks guys! If it the damp that’s causing it that’ll need addressing first because it will only happen again.

addressing the damp is how big of a job? assuming that it’s a tough one, or can i buy a pot of stuff to paint the wall with first, kid of to seal it?

Walls were not misted. Plastered walls should have a thinned coat of paint over them first to help seal the plaster. Then apply paint normally over the top. You'll have to keep going with removing the top coat untill it stops travelling/peeling to a firm enough edge. You can use Zinnser Peelstop to seal the wall or Zinnser Gardz to seal it as well. Once dried fill the edges of the paint with filler, sand down, touch up the filler with paint and let it dry. Then recoat the wall as normal. Decorating as all about preparation and this is a typical example of poor preparation, easily fixed.
