Kitchen / Living Area layout

Hi.

I’m having a new extension built with the kitchen open plan living room area being 8.8m w x 7m d. Ideally i’d like the layout in the pic below and was thinking on the following spacing: Right wall kitchen unit 60cm deep, 1.1m gap beteen unit and kitchen island , island 1.2m wide with 4 corner seats, 1.2m between island and dining table, 90cm wide table, 70cm between table and sofa, 3.1m from back of sofa to tv wall. Will this be too cramped? Open to ideas

Thanks for the reply and linking the article, some really useful info there. The distances I’ve listed above are all in line with your recommendations from the article apart from the table to the sofa. If I reduced the distance between island and dining table to 1m and increased distance between table and sofa to 90cm do you still think it would be cramped?

You could have a sofa on the wall that backs on to children's play room, with a pair of swivel chairs opposite ( so can chat to people at dining table too ) and a fireplace or tv on the right wall centrally between them (in the area marked 3500)Have the dining table under where second rooflight is drawn - and have a further pair of swivel Chairs in the window/door area overlooking garden, to watch the children play outside ? But that's just one option... there's lots you can do with this space ! This is the sort of design dilemma we often help with in conjunction with a freelance specific design for your kitchen - (so you can shop around with your own plan) as they are all linked within the space, we usually draw the whole area as part of the design process...

First congratulations on your baby! You didn't mention if the kitchen would stay. If the kitchen goes, I'd keep the room as open as possible, which means compact kitchen and thus real thoughtful planning. You'd like to keep an eye on your kid the upcoming years. What's on the wall opposite the stove? (a floorplan with measurements would help a lot to receive great ideas, btw) I'd place a dining table in your kitchen. This way you can have a cot in the living area. And in about 6 to 8 months, your little one will be sitting with you at the table, making a mess. Note: your tv is way too high (no neckpain while watching?) and too large. And is this the only reception room aka living room aka great room? :)

Personally I think the laundry is too big for the size of house and the living room feels small because it is also the entrance hall- so I would move things around

Hi We have a similar space at home - my advice is whatever you decide to make the furniture (and your mindset) FLEXIBLE - ie movable and kid proof (washable covers etc) the use of my space has changed over the years and the idea of a play space for children seemed to disappear very rapidly (and be redundant space) as when they are little they really just want to be where you are - and you want them to be where you can see them. The breakfast bar has been the center of life! They are drawing whilst you are cooking or making lego etc., then when older doing homework etc/getting help! When teenagers they took over the family room and my husband and I commandeered the space in the back for peace and reading etc! My point is life and practical needs change very rapidly with growing children, Think about using the family room for your own needs as with young twins it may be very useful to be able to to have hobby/musical instruments/ (whatever your interests are) - left out and accessible for that precious time and space to yourself - and with a lockable door.:)

i think the measurements are fine other than gap between table and sofa. The space beneath the sofa seems underused, plumbing permitting, could you make that a laundry/boot room? By eye it seems just about wide enough.

Is anything going on the island such as hob or sink as i assume it’s intentionally short so people can converse across it? Maybe your tall units could go against the shower room wall and have L shaped island instead?

I forgot to ask, the tv wall is 4m?,does that mean tou’re having a huge tv?

Hi Minnie, our thinking was we would have double french doors linking the current living room to the back extension and that living room would become more of a children’s playroom and would like to be able to see them whilst in the extension - was toying with the idea of utility but opted for bigger living area. The planning drawings don’t actually show completely accurately what we’ve decided - our kitchen units will be L shaped and go against the shower room, also the island is 2.4m deep (with 1.2m between island and large sliding doors at the back and 1.2m between island and units on shower room wall) x 1.2m wide - do you think the island is too small? Also no the TV isn’t going to be huge just a 65” but thinking about how we’ll decorate that wall eg panelling
