Roof coating or painting

Has anyone had their roof coated with an alternative colour please? It usually seems companies remove moss/dirt etc then paint with a coating. Seems to look great but would love to know personal experience and an idea of pricing. I am interested mostly for aesthetic reasons - there isn't anything wrong with our roof but the colour is not particularly nice.

Also can you paint exterior brick? Our new house is mostly rendered but with a couple of feet of plain brick at the bottom - we are going to be converting a single garage so might be hard to match the brick I think, so wondered about painting them both in the render or similar colour. thank you!

I would ask the advice of a roofer, someone with years of experience. A roof needs to be functional and I recall our roofer discussing the removal of moss etc with a neighbour.

I will of course get someone professional to do the job! I just wanted to see if people had experience of having this done themselves, other customers rather than pushy companies like you mention in your article!

Just noticed that you can see he has also changed direction when rolling. You should roll from top to bottom to apply it equally and evenly. You can see he's curved his roller. I know it's only a mist cost but realistically you should apply the 1st, 2nd and 3rd coat the same way...so I wouldn't hold much hope for when you add colour, sorry.

Most roofing tiles, if they are not slate, are a kind of concrete so in theory they are paintable with either a masonry paint or something like Sikaflex which is designed for flat roofs. A masonry paint would require a sealer and at least two coats of finish in order to last any time at all. The main problem with painting a roof is that once it is painted it will always have to be painted, otherwise as it wears it will begin to look poor, normal masonry finishes depending on the substrate and position etc can last from 3 - 7 years if you are lucky, so that needs to be born in mind. Hi, I have painted many kitchens. You definitely need to clean and prime well first. Then remove doors to paint them as easier if they are laid flat, use a brush for any mouldings and then a mini-gloss roller for main coats as it produces the best finish. 2-3 coats should do it. For the internal front parts of the cupboards that will show behind the doors, again clean and prime. Depending on access, the mini roller can also be used and creates a neat finish. There used to be a really good primer around called something like liquid sandpaper, which primed the surfaces. But nowadays painting cabinets is much more common so you have a wider option of primers. In terms of paint, I do think oil based is far better than water based as it does not chip easily. It means longer waiting times between coats but is well worth it. If you use water-based you will have to retouch at some point. F&B eggshell has nice colours but is water based now and just not tough enough. You can get any colour you want matched by Dulux and their trade eggshell is not shiny and as tough as nails. I would not bother using a first coat of another paint, just go straight on with the Downpipe shade. Good luck, it should look lovely.

Hi Peony, Very interesting choice of the Vardo! Most stairwells are dark and narrow and the best way to enlarge, inspire and brighten up the space is to paint colour white adding occasional feature wall, paint handrails in bold paint colours, adding coloured and big art/frames. Painting and decorating the staircase in such bold colour is brave, and it will look outstanding, guaranteed. The only worry is that present wall colour may not necessarily work with it. You could add little more and paint walls - that would certainly be a bonus. A blue would nail it. Good luck with your project! We also asked our roofer about removing moss and he spoke at length about the potential downside of doing so. He had 40 years experience of roofing issues. There are companies out there who advertise procedures which can appear to improve the appearance of a roof but may in fact compromise the functionality of the roof. I thought the article may have been useful but if not then not to worry.

Ours is not really a moss issue I just don't like the colour very much, superficial I know! But the roof is in a good condition as we've just had a full survey, but we need to paint the house and so wanted to see if anyone had experience of painting/coating the roof too. Ours is the type of tile that can be painted/coated. The article was useful in that it seemed to say don't use a cheap product. I definitely agree on that!
