Open plan kitchen/living/dining
Comments (20)My major concern about the kitchen plan is the position of the cooking area. Are you using an Aga type range in a fireplace? It's nowhere near the prep and washing up areas of the kitchen and carrying hot food across the path through the double doors from the hall create a real hazard. Rearranging the kitchen to the lower part of your plan and including the cooker in that general area separates the danger areas from the tables and lounging area. Altering the entrances to the utility room and shower room and the position of the patio doors as suggested by Man About the House will give you more kitchen space and a better view of the garden....See Morehelp creating open plan kitchen/dining room/snug!
Comments (5)If the utility becomes a dumping ground currently - at least you can close the door to it . If you open everything up then all that dumped stuff will just be visible to all surely? Why not look at what’s dumped - is it laundry ? Is it waiting to be ironed ? Or waiting to be taken upstairs ? Or dirty washing to be sorted into colour/white/darks etc. If so - redesign the utility to have an ironing board area and shelving for folded washing, and sorting baskets for dirty laundry, hanging pole for ironed shirts on coat hangers etc. If the stuff dumped is outdoor coats boots dog walking stuff etc then it might be better to design a boot room space instead ? Do you see where I’m going with this? The space isn’t currently working - so yes - some redesign is required - but needs lots of looking at WHY it’s not working in order to fix it properly. I’d suggest you go though this in great detail. Look at what’s wrong and then start making it work better. ( this is the sort of project we often work with clients on ! You aren’t alone !)...See MoreEnough space for a dining room table in open plan living space?
Comments (17)I’m no good at drawing floorplans but womdered if this would work: - Keep the island but turn it 90 degrees to face the garden. You will probably need to drop to 2 bar stools - Shorten the kitchen run with the sink and hob on it. One of those may need to go on the island - Dining table goes in front of the doors to the garden, parallel to the island and to the doors - then in the space in between your island and your dining table, basically under the big steel, you put a small sofa on the kitchen side of the room and a tv on the opposite wall. Yes it’s a walk way but this is not your main tv watching area, it’s just for the kids while you prep lunch etc....See MoreOpen Plan Kitchen/Living/Dining Design Dilemma
Comments (7)Oval dining tables are able to seat everyone comfortably and a good choice. Not so easy to come by however! Maybe a glass top table would add a bit of sparkle/bounce light around the area? If you have kids an oval or round extending to oval best. My dining table is oval with extra leaf added to round top and I keep it as extended. Might be easier to find round to oval than just looking for fixed oval top? Choose a sofa with neutral but washable loose covers (ie machine wash) and add colourful cushions to make a statement. As your wood in new kitchen is dark and warm tones, follow the warm tones with dining table/chair/sofa legs in dark wood....See MoreCWD
