What is the German brand laminate? Did you specifically request German? There are some excellent UK manufactured choices.

Is that supply and fit? What sizes are you looking for?

Hi Daisy, we're going for a Schuller kitchen through a local independent so it's their default laminate.

Yes, I belive that's supply and fit. They've divided the worktops into 3 pieces approx. 2.15m long, 1.85m long and a big slab for the peninsula 1.76m x 1.3m wide.

We may be paying a premium due to our location though. Thanks

Hi Sonlane, The miter joint is usually more pricey, if it fits your budget you should be ok doing it. Otherwise, choosing a non-mitered edge brings the quote down. If you choose this option then go for a drop down that doesn't look like a continuation of the pattern. The filler for the joint should be one approved by Consentino to be used on Dekton, if it is approved and who is fitting the worktop is experienced, you shouldn't have problem with water and cleaning. If you are worried, try to get the brand they'll be using so you can check if it is approved by the brand. But if you check their manual here, they give directions and suggestions. Basically they say " Mastic or silicon can be used as an adhesive, due to the rigidity, minimal expansion and excellent dimensional stability (straightness, squareness, bending, warping) of Dekton material." I'd go to photos on houzz. select kitchens, then just flick through loads of pics and save all the ones you like then you might see a pattern appear... Also think about your space, is it big, bright,.....one colour in one room might not suit another room.....

Dekton makes some great surfaces, but their faux Calacatta marble isn't one of them. I find it looks too fake. If you want engineered stone, I'd go for either Caesarstone's Calacatta Nuvo #5131 (we just installed this in a client's two new bathrooms, see photo below), or their Statuario Nuvo #5111. The former is a bit less veiny--more subtle.

Dekton has more than one available texture- it’s possible that you felt a sample of one but chose another. Separately they do produce some finishes for floors- it’s possible your fabricator has sourced extra grip in error

I would avoid Dekton. Have had a very difficult experience with ours which was recently fitted. The texture was completely wrong, not fit for purpose, and Consentino (the manufacturer) would not accept that there was anything wrong with it even though it was totally obvious to everyone who walked into our kitchen. We've had an arduous and stressful few months trying to get it sorted. If I had the choice again I'd go for something like Caesarstone. We've had Silestone before and liked it (though you do have to keep on top of tea stains!), but I would never send any more money in the direction of Cosentino, which manufactures both Dekton and Silestone. If you do want to go ahead with it, shop around - ours was just short of £5k for 2 bigger pieces than yours supply & fit (though I think the pricing is affected by the efficiency of how many pieces can be cut from one slab).

The pricing seems about right but it entirely depends on the style choices you make- Sometimes a heavily patterned Quartz can cost more than Dekton.

As far as texture goes this is entirely personal choice. Some of the Quartz are textured and Dekton has different finishes depending on which colour choice you make.

I would point out that when people admire your kitchen they run their hand over your worktop (never your cabinets or appliances). It’s also true that your worktops get the most wear. So there is an argument to focus your spending where it matters and many would argue that is your worktop.

All seems expensive to me, is this from a showroom as i'd search for a local fabricator or go on the worktop company websites. Buying through a showroom could add 1000's to the cost.

Also depends on how much you need, stone worktops are sold in slabs of about 3-3.2m x 1400 and in most cases its purchased to order, so if you need just over 2 slabs you will be paying for 3 slabs and the rest will be landfill, if its a popular colour then some tops are 'stock tops' and you'd pay for 1/2 slabs, but they can't keep 1/2 used worktops as the next batch might end up being a slightly different colour. Also different colours for quartz can vary in price. With dekton, depending on the colour this may be only on the top layer (print), so if you want a marble pattern with veining, this doesn't carry on through the slab so the edge and drainer grooves etc are a solid colour, quartz has the veining through the slab. There's also a wide range of quartz manufacturers to consider which all vary in price so i'd definitely shop around and ceaserstone isn't a particularly expensive quartz in my experience.

It’s completely untrue that a worktop fabricator offers worktops to the public for less money than the retail price charged by showrooms. It’s untrue to think that Joe Public can get a better price than companies that buy regularly and in volume. Plus those companies will be demanding of quality and insisting the fabricator makes good anything that is poorly executed- I have had two friends who have had new kitchens in the last few months and had worktop problems-one of which had it resolved by their kitchen showroom.

Also there are many worktop fabricators with sophisticated imaging equipment that means they can be sure to choose an exact colour match even when slabs are from different batches.

And although most Dekton is patterned on the top and will have plain sides it is also more scratch resistant, more heat resistant, more stain resistant than any Quartz available. Furthermore a top of the range Caesarstone can cost more than some Dektons.

And yes there are unbranded Quartz that appear more cost effective- lots of these these come from China which affects some peoples buying decision- and they do seem to be harder to clean and have lesser guarantees.

Be interesting to know the colours of the ceaserstone and dekton, the sizes of the slabs including thickness, upstands, cutouts for hob, cutout for sink polished for undermount or unpolished for overmount and any curves and i can give you a quote, you can direct mesage me.

Thanks all for your input. I managed to speak to the fabricator direct and the Dekton I'd chosen was in the highest price bracket (Arga) and the Ceaserstone was in one of the low to mid ranges (shitake), so that helps explain some of it.

I need 2 slabs and can potentially use some of the off cuts for a splashback and upstands to make it more cost effective. We have the option of Silestone locally so I'm going to look at their range too but I can't find anyone locally that does Neolith (we're based in Jersey).

@Lifestyle kitchens, that's really kind thank you, but I think we may be a bit far away!

if you have a silestone fabricator locally then if they have the cutting equipment they would also be able to supply dekton (both made by cosentino), also you can use an online calculator for an idea https://www.worktops.net/products/ultra-compact/dekton/band-4-dekton/dekton-arga

If you go for dekton, insist on seeing and feeling your slab before it is cut and installed, so that you have a chance to reject it if it isn’t right. Once it’s in, Consentino will wipe their hands of it even if it is inferior to the product you ordered.
