Draining groves!!

Hi all, our new kitchen will need to have the sink in the island (worktop tbc, but probably quartz) but I’m a bit perplexed about the “new” trend not to have draining grooves. The sink will be a double and we’ll have the dishwasher next to it. Obviously the worktop would look much sleeker without draining grooves but am I going to find it infuriating in real life?! Thoughts?

We use a roll mat (I'll try and post the link) over part of the sink to put stuff on to dry. It works brilliantly for us

The main reason for having the granite groves and the sunken sink is because granite can take the water and is easy to clean. You would usually place the stainless steel drainer on top of a worktop that can't have moisture on it such as a wood worktop. Granite is a more attractive material than the industrial stainless steel, so we use as much of it (and as little of stainless steel) as possible. The beauty of granite is that you can cut in to it and the edge is as beautiful as the top, so when the sink is under the worktop, the edge is a bonus. However, if you like the stainless steel look there is no reason why you shouldn't use the drainer - and there are some sleek stylish stainless steel sinks and drainers.

yes groves done on the counter not a separate sink with drain broad. If that what you've had and like, I appreciate your comments.

the beauty of sliding door is to have them flush with the floor! Firstly there must be a drain in the floor aluminium grove to make sure rain water is drained away quickly. Good quality doors come with a number of seals that stop rain water coming in. When doors are shut no water should be coming in. Also the external patio area should have a suitable fall to flush rain away from the door. Obviously sometimes doors are left open and therefore the rain can end up on the internal floor. Good quality varnished wood floors will not be affected by a a bit of rain but oiled floors will be slightly marked. Dark floors will show watermark more than light floors. In order to give continuity between internal and external areas it is often advisable to use tiles like in the picture above or maybe LVT in place of hardwood floor. However, good quality hardwood can surely survive the odd light rain. In any case it is absolutely imperative to use good quality doors which come in many types with all relevant features to stop rain, bugs, wind and UV rays coming in.

I advise my customers not to bother and have the extra worktop space and use a tea towel or mat to put any washing up on. The grooves don't have enough fall in them to drain the water away so it just sits there and you get lime scale build up and they're harder to clean up. With the recessed drainer again the water will just sit there as there isn't the fall to drain the water away but the water won't drip over the edge. Again you lose so much worktop having this and its an additional cost, much more expensive than just the grooves. I think your installer is giving you good advice. Quartz is 100% sealed compared to granite and marble, but i'd still be careful and clear up any spills especially anything acidic and also not put hot pans on it, don't use it as a chopping board with sharp knives etc and it will look as good as new for years to come.

The fall of the drainer grooves isn't enough for the water to drain away the same as a top mount sink, so the water just sits there and if you're in a hard water area you'll get limescale build up in the grooves.

I had drainer grooves in mine as a way of defining the area. I wanted them, hubby didn’t. Having said that I wouldn’t really have bothered either way. I do use a dishwasher but there are some items that I hand wash. The drainer grooves are tapered and I do like to think that some of the excess goes into them to give the pans a dry area. I do wipe down with a cloth each time and then use a fishscale cloth to finish off. It’s just personal preference. Here’s mine

I don’t think drainer grooves do anything.

Not that I think a slope is any better but it is an alternative.

Personally I would save your money

Omitting then means you can use that area of worktop to make a sandwich or roll pastry or write your shopping list etc etc etc . If they are there, that area only had one use. ( and it’s not a great one as they are a bit pants as mention by others too on this thread)
