Roof lantern or flat glass rooflight?

We’re having a new extension that will be open plan kitchen, dining area and snug. The extension is SW facing. We want to be able to open up so much space to the outside world and let the light pour in. We’ve opted for a roof Lantern with bifolds. However, we’re now having 2nd thoughts. Maybe roof lights would be better. Insulation is key to avoid cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

How exciting. The specification of the glazing is what will really impact its heat efficiency and your glaziers should be able to advise you further on this.

One small note about lanterns is that they technically add volume to the space, which needs to be taken into account when calculating the BTU and heating requirements of a space. Once you have made your decision make sure to update your plumber regarding the BTU requirements.

Interested in where you ended up on this decision? Having the same dilemma but our extension is north facing so light is main priority

Thanks for the feedback. Jonathan my concern was the dining table was not under a skylight. I could only move the lanterns back another 600mm where the new flay roof extension starts. However I do like the though of a long thin rooflight like the one in the picture. The longest I can see is one from EOS at 2.4 x 0.6m. My other through it to have the rooflights or lanterns running vertically instead...any thoughts? Thanks for all the advise BTW!

Hi, Too much light at one end of a room eg Bi-fold + Rooflight makes one end of the new space very bright and the other end comparatively dark. The contrast in light and dark within an extended living space can lead to a cave corner or even whole original room being cave like and a bright area in the extension only. In general useful daylight travels twice as far into the room as the top of the window. This is why I nearly always recommend tall glazed gable facing the garden to capture this useful light without. High ceiling heights and tall windows have the same effect. The Georgians know what they were doing.

We went through this same decision process with our 6x4m rear extension recently. Eventually we choose a gable with glazed end for several reason. Firstly several friends and comments online made me wonder about the heat and light issues with lanterns. It will also be our main living area when entertaining so noise on a large glass lantern was also a consideration. However worth noting we spoke to several builders and all came back with slightly higher estimates for the gable than the flat roof extension so that might also be a something worth considering (although that did include the glasses end, bifold and skylights). I'm currently researching skylights (that's how I found your post) and were looking at circa £6k for velux and possibly more if we go for frameless bespoke ones. Good luck with your planning.

We’ve gone with a Altas roof lantern 2.0. It hasn’t been fitted yet but after viewing a property that had the roof lights, we knew that the lantern would work better for us.
