cooker hood with ambient lighting

Just about to start new kitchen/ diner extension and trying to figure out lighting options over the island which will have the hob on it. Problem is the island will span across existing kitchen and into extension which will have higher vaulted ceiling - this makes the mood lighting options a bit tricky without a flush ceiling. I don’t like the option of pendant lights over the island with one hanging from the vaulted ceiling on a much longer cable. I wondered if there are cooker extraction hoods (which we will have over the hob) available which have built in ambient lighting for the island as well as downlighting for the hob…has anyone come across such a design and can recommend any?

Hi kittihawke and minni101, thank you for your ideas. I don't have too much problem with light in the daytime, cause those two windows facing South-West. I wanted to blend the kitchen in, you're right kittihawke- I did try to camouflage it. Now thinking, I might look into a splashback looking like antique silver mirror, food for though. But what I'm really trying to do is to get ideas for the ceiling. I have lights under the cabinet above the sink, hood had lights. There is a floor lamp next to the couch, and a light attached to the shelf near the window above the chaise lounge. The panel next to the whole bookshelf is a folding door, which ultimately separates living an kitchen, but we haven't got around to use it yet though. Mirror on the breast chimney is a good idea, but I was planning to make a gallery wall -it's still on the early stages. I will probably paint the wall eventually, but there is so much going on right now in the room, I can't attempt thinking to paint just yet. I really want to find some interesting ceiling light ideas for now. Can you help, please?

A bulkhead (150-200mm deep ?!) the same shape as island or whatever below can often help in this situation, your builder is giving you good advice! Sometimes you can use this bulkhead to add good task lighting too ! If you have been having building work done in order to facilitate this change to the kitchen - you might find that you need to replace a cooker hood with one that is 'as good as or better than ' the one that was installed before - in order to be signed off ! So I'd suggest that you don't buy a recirculating hood until you have checked that this wouldn't cause your build to not be approved !

If your budget will allow, consider a wider upstand. Rather than the standard 100 mm (4 in) I assume is priced in, maybe consider 150 or 180 mm instead. The added height may catch additional splashes and extend the life of your paint, but will still give you the seamless look you are after. Per the previous comment, choose your kitchen paint wisely and it should wipe clean pretty well. For our white walled clients, we have been using Dulux Ultra White paint with great success. Looks like a great space - enjoy it!

Vented hobs do take up a lot of space as the motor needs about 200mm clearance below the hob so you will lose at least 1 drawer underneath. As a rule of thumb in designing a kitchen you shouldn't make the extraction worse than what it already is, but you can fit a wall mounted expelair type extractor at 60 litres/sec on another wall, Also if you start moving walls you can have building control involved and they would pick up on your extractor. The modern looking shaker doors have narrower frames and don't look as chunky now and there's a few handleless versions now and true handleless styles as well. If you opt for a canopy/top box there's the telescopic cooker hoods which look smart.
