what colour accents for Dove grey cabinets, marble tiles

Hi,

I’m planning to update 2 of my bathrooms and wanted a light and airy look as both bathrooms do not get much natural light (no windows and in north facing rooms). Decided on Matt dove grey cabinets, white marble effect gloss tiles wall tiles, same tiles in Matt for the floor and a white quartz effect worktop. I’ve bought just the regular grohe chrome taps and bathrooms mixers. Picture attached shows dove grey door on the left, tile and the small rectangle is the worktop sample.

What colour accents can I add?

What wall paint colour would you suggest (north facing)?
What other colour accents would you suggest - anything from radiator, loo roll holder, to decorative items/ bin?
What tile trim to pick? Silver or stainless steel?
Do I go with grey grout on floor tiles (going for white grout for wall tiles for a more subtle seamless look)
Any pictures of what you’ve done with your bathrooms with a similar theme would be much appreciated

The great thing about having a neutral background like this is that you can put almost any colour you like. For my bathrooms, I kept all the fixtures neutral* and just added colour with towels and small items. I like strong colour, so I have sets in petrol blue, burnt orange and strong green (these also link back to the bedrooms).

Depending on how large the painted wall is, you could leave it neutral (maybe with a picture?) or go wild with wallpaper. I would tend to go with chrome for the various fixtures, since that is what you already have. For colours, perhaps something to make it feel warm, since it is north facing. Coral -> orange -> red shades, perhaps? It depends how strong a contrast you like. The best way is to either make up some paint samples to see what works, or get a couple of small items and see how well they go. You won't easily get a wide range of shades for bins, etc, so maybe keep those neutral. And remember that the same colour can look very different when it is shiny than when it is matte.

If in doubt about an item, keep it neutral!

* I had a tile shortage in one room, and added a deep strip of contrasting tiles in petrol blue. For an emergency decision, this has worked really well.

Hi Cake lady thanks for your comment. I have considered the wood effect tiles. However the kitchen adjoins a hall which has an oak laminate floor. I'm concerned the two different types of wood will clash. what do you think? Good to know they're low maintenance. I'm steering well away from gloss tiles as spent years trying to keep black gloss tiles clean in our bathroom. Finally replaced last year !

Hi Daisy Thanks for your response no we need worktop as well for other side so no worktop purchased to . The greys on the floor and the cupboards is so different don’t seem to go together. As the worktop will have a black trim beneath doi go black. Or what grey do I match to the floor or the units

Thank you for your views. It's reassuring to feel that both options would work. I'm still flipping between the two every 5 minutes, but will need to bite the bullet soon. Looking back at all my kitchen ideabook, I started off saving white kitchens with industrial/concrete features (grey), then moved to dark grey after visiting showrooms. The first section of the kitchen will be a fairly narrow galley with a bank of high units on one side then, after french doors, it will open up into an L-shape broken-plan section with lots of natural light. A 3D view of the galley section made me feel that matt dark grey might be a bit overwhelming. But it would also be dramatic, if paired with the right colours. Argh. I'll let you know what I decide. At the moment it's looking like white kitchen/grey walls&floor/lots of plants on the windowsills. Anyone ever feel like just throwing in the towel and bringing in an interior designer? The whole house is being remodelled, and the decision part of my brain wants a long holiday. I might have to toss a coin. p.s. I love the Critall windows. It's too late to have those in the kitchen, but we're hoping to have interior critall glazing elsewhere

That sounds lovley, i like that combination. There's alot of things you can do, if your unsure you can always just paint the walls with Kitchen specific paint as you've covered the area behind the cooker. If it fades then you just repaint! so its a nice easy soloution. or a nice white tile/mosaic tile. In terms of colour you have a huge option available as you've chosen a lovely timeless colour and kitchen style, so really it would be down to what style you want. If you dont want to make a decision straight away you can go quite neutral with the wall colour and bring in colour in art work, soft furnishings and accessories, Even a plant or herbs.
