Fireplace advice
Comments (14)Your surround is probably from the 1930's. There are some interesting tile patterns from that period that would go well with your surround. Look in architectural salvage yards, armed with the dimensions of the opening within the surround. You might be lucky enough to find a copper or cast iron insert-basket. Also, instead of keeping your surround white, consider a deep beige or cafe colour to create a focal point in the room. I would consult a local firecentre regarding a basket for solid fuel or the installation of a gas basket. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTT_IQ7jmkd-NMnaXCxmAs12WYP59IFZAqaBqReho8kPDkwG_fE http://www.c20fireplaces.co.uk/repro-fireplace-insert/rfpi006_craddock-art-deco-tiled-fireplace-insert...See MoreFireplace help - stay or go!
Comments (16)If you are thinking of reinstating a real fire your hearth may have to be changed so wait until you decide as you may want to change it then. Otherwise I would paint the surround in a good quality paint to suit your taste. I used a flat eggshell by Farrow and Ball, creamy white called New White, on my mahogany fireplace about 15years ago and while it took a few coats to do it properly it has lasted and us still perfect. People ask me where I got my lovely mantle, and all the woodwork in the room is now painted the same! So what was an ugly mantle is now a feature...See MoreFireplace surround advice
Comments (9)Ooo thanks so much for the response. I love these ideas. I prefer the soft white look of the limestone. But the Carrara marble would be more authentic to the era. So it’s tough to decide. Particularly like the last fireplace surround on your first post (the London fields house). That looks to be a Carrara marble. Do you think that option would go with our fireplace insert tiles? As the carrara has grey flecks in there. Closer up image of the tiles below - the base colour in the tiles is a dark brown. Thanks...See MoreAdvice on old dark wood fireplace and living room
Comments (23)As others have noted, it is absolutely stunning! So i am firmly in the no paint camp....I think I read a suggestion to see if you can lighten the feel by first changing the wall color in the side cupboards and see if changing the glass to plate glass - so agree! You could always take this as a first step and see how this changes things before going the full paintout path....See MoreNicola Rhodes
