advice on Victorian fireplace refresh!

Hi everyone. We recently bought my parents Victorian house. It was refurbished by my dear Dad back in the 80s.. He reinstated a period fireplace and surround in the lounge (a 50s Baxi Bermuda had been put in place of the original!) the old outline was visible so he essentially sourced something period they liked and fitted it, so the surround and fireplace are originals but not original to the house. We are just not feeling the tiles and hearth combo at the moment!. Our plan is to reflect the chequer board tiles of the hallway to the hearth and then thinking of painting over the floral tiles or maybe replacing them with something bold. I wondered if anyone has any tips or suggestions? Attached pic (and yes that’s the original Victorian distemper paint under the wallpaper!) Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Ben

We installed a very similar fireplace with authentic tiles in cream, dark green and dark amber and sourced curtains and wallpaper to match as a starting point and colour scheme …. but really the colour of the tiles are quite insignificant unless you make them so as we did .… the other elements in the room and the black of the fire can dominant…its up to you.

I did something similar in a Victorian Property with the slip tiles. It was affordable but gives a real impact and means you have colours to play with the in the room and can just change up the accessories/walls to suit when you fancy a change again! Hope that helps a little?

Oh thank you, had given up hope of getting a reply. My local fireplace shop says he doesn't restore because they never end up looking as good as clients expect, I just want to glue gone don't want it to look new. Thanks again

Hi Jane, There is an hg acid you can buy from tile suppliers which will clean the tiles up. If you also take one of the existing tiles with you the tile company should be able to find you a close match. This is good to refer to http://www.originalfeatures.co.uk/victorian-floor-tiles/tile-cleaning-guide It is also possible that you could replace with heat resistant marble which is treated specifically for fireplaces (does not crack with the heat) so if you're having a coal fire as a victorian house would have had it will stand the test of time. Are you planning to put a baxi coal fire back into the space? These tiles also look to have cracked due to the adhesive bed not being level, it will be important to take the existing tiles up and redo from scratch. If you confirm where you are in the country I can suggest a tile company you could visit.

Hi. You can paint over it. I think you could use chalk paint or probably zinsser as a primer and then paint of your choice or there are instructions to do it "properly" that I can copy a link to. Why not use one of the paint visualiser apps first though to see what you think, dulux, crown etc have them or try photoshop if you can use it. Personally if you don't like it, I'd remove the surround which hopefully should be in a few pieces and replace it with a reclaimed wooden surround of the period. You should be able to pick up one cheaply on eBay and then sell yours

I would say taking up a chunk of the otherwise useable wall with a radiator really isn't ideal. if you really can't afford to move it, then I would look at how beautiful/low the window is. If it starts low and the room is not super light, I'd be worried about blocking the light. conversely, if its v bright then def dont put TV opposite the window. I would def think about whether this is south/north facing before planning. looks like a lovely room, good luck!!

Thanks everyone. I guess the challenge is replacing the fire place tiles. No easy way to do that other than remove it and fitting them from the rear by the looks of it 😬
