Thoughts on living space

Hi, this is just the estate agents floor plan as we haven’t actually moved yet!
I’m just playing about with ideas for the living space…I don’t want an open plan area but a more broken plan space could work…I’m thinking about a half wall where the blue line is and some sort of divider where the red block is. I’d love French doors at the back but not sure if I really have the room there?
As I said this is very early days and just throwing ideas about. Any suggestions taken!

How about having bifold doors all across the back, and making a kitchen diner? Have a separate lounge?

hi - with this new door configuration it opens up further possibilities - safety wise it's best to move your hob in from the edge of the island - so pan handles are less 'knock able ' designing to suit rooms is ok - but much better to design to suit the people using the room too ! to do this effectively a good designer will need to find out as much as possible about you and the members if your family - how you cook/ shop how often you entertain etc etc it takes time and when done well provides the best results for the room. this is what I do for a living - I don't sell product - purely design !- so instead of offering 'free design ' like studios do ( then making margin on the products you buy) - I charge a fee to design and then you shop around and get the best deal saving much more than the design fee in the process ! so you can see with this in mind - I can't design it for free for you on this thread - but happy to take it further in a professional capacity if you want to drop me an email ! ( nb we are concept designers who can take on whole houses too - so could look at the project in entirety too if needed - as what you do with each room has a knock on effect on the next ! ) kind regards Karen OnePlan

I think I would knock the kitchen into the back hall and have this big room with the stairs in as a dining hall. I would have the kitchen in the annex. That way you don't have to knock down what appears to be major walls in the older part of the house

The new fireplace is 136cm wide (old one 131cm) and 116cm high (old one 110cm). I love the look of the main wall in the picture above. What do you think of this mirror? Its diameter is 110cm. As for blinds, I like what you've suggested for the two little windows on the fireplace wall as privacy isn't an issue here. However, the main window to the front (which is massive) needs a blind for privacy. would it be a no-no to put a wooden venetian here which would mean two different blind types in one room? I'm guessing so but what to do|? This is the blind that John Lewis sell, supposedly in the same fabric as the curtains already posted, but the colours/pattern are the opposite way round. Good to put together or not? I'm still thinking little windows only - and probably to hang inside the recess (?) although I know this reduces the light.

To me it sounds like you will move as you don’t love the house (this was us a year ago- our home ticked every box but I just didn’t love it. We ended up moving). If you are considering moving then personally I would leave the layout as it is and save your money for your next house. If you are planning on making it your long term home then I’d do a side extension to really maximise its potential. Maybe talk to an estate agent about what would add value to help you development decide?

You could also have a smaller snug type lounge, again knock down the kitchen wall, and create an huge kitchen/living/dining room and have bifold doors running across the back.
I actually specialise in 3D spacial planning as an interior designer, please let me know if you’d like some help visualising and of these suggestions 😊

They don't want an open plan kitchen/dining/living room Nancy. The rear living room window could be replaced with French doors. That's what I did with mine.

I don’t want a big open plan area, I prefer to be not watched as I cook 😊…

The reason for having the doors where they are is that is where there is level access to the garden, the living room window has a small path below and steps to the front garden directly under it so it isn’t possible to add doors directly to the garden there. I’ve added a couple of photos to show this.

I like the idea of the wood slat wall though, that’s a great idea.

I also really love French doors rather than sliding or bifold.

Um, would be possible to have French doors in living room with some landscaping changes. You could have a deck directly outside though looks like you'd need to keep some airflow underneath for the airbrick.

Hi Sarah, thank you! Yes I did think about that…taking the railings down and having an extending deck area…I think once I’m in I can see if that would actually work.
