Kitchens Furniture Design Dilemma

Distance between back of sofa and dining table?

I have a tight open plan space we are about to renovate. (27'10" for a kitchen/dining/snug area) If I have a sofa backed to a dining table (so it can face the TV), how much clearance should I have for seating? I'm thinking 2 feet? Or is that way too tight?
And a massive thank you to the Houzz community which has been indispensable the last couple of weeks!

Hi Anne! You've been busy! Structurally, that looks like a good solid kitchen, ready for painting. We're big fans of Annie Sloan chalk paint. The beauty of chalk paint is that you can do all the work yourself, as opposed to having your cupboards resprayed. You don't even need to remove the doors. No prep, sanding or primer- just paint a few coats, and apply wax. 'Old white' sounds like just what you are looking for. Our wild card is Paris Grey (very much in fashion, and would work beautifully with your worktop). In terms of splashbacks, anything goes with off white or grey units. We've attached some examples of some splashbacks. If you are considering going a colour, narrow down your search, then buy a tester pot to see if you can live with it. Alternatively order a glass sample to see it in the space. Theres a limitless world of colour out there, so have fun!

Present it as a dining room when you sell. Ideally, the space would look best with an oblong dining table and no sofa. But removing the sofa and just moving the table into the room is fine. A plain white/linen tablecloth would help hide the chairs; flowers always go down well. Personally I think the space is definitely too cramped for a sofa and dining area, and since you have a lounge, you want to present the house to look as spacious as possible. Consider a narrow console table against the wall, under the pictures, once you rearrange things.

Well thank you everyone! I've been persuaded that the 100mm gap is worth losing a fraction of space from the living room, so have implemented this change. Also have moved the hob onto the island to make it more sociable when cooking. It's interesting hearing people say about the dishwasher being too far away, as currently we have to walk around a peninsular when you first get into the kitchen to get to the dishwasher (as we haven't moved it) so in actual fact, I think it'll feel closer than we are used to, so I don't think that's something we'd necessarily change. Plus it's only 4 steps from the DW to where the end of the island will I think be. @Townhouse - thanks for the offer, but unfortunately nowhere near harrogate most of the time, but will bear it in mind if we're up that way! @Laura, thanks for getting back to me, I've changed it to the 100mm on the "working" side of the kitchen. I think you're right, and your family has height I could only dream of, when I'm only 5'3! and J & Townhouse, I've also been considering the benefits of having the fridge/freezer closer to the island, and having the pantry at the end. Part of me can't decide what is more useful to have closest! And yes, with the island I wasn't planning on having units on both sides the whole way along, to allow space for chairs/legs to tuck under :)

Understood :-) you may be surprised at our costings though, everything we do is handmade but at a reasonable cost as its all done in house, sometimes words like bespoke, custom, crystal and chandelier tend to mean high prices but not with us. No trouble i love doing it. i think the smaller table works better too, central to the middle window and flexible access to the island seating.

i was thinking the middle window, if budget allows, could be patio doors to reduce traffic through your kitchen area?

I’m thinking of combining the middle window and the slider to make a big slider. So that would push the opening over that way as well?

Do katlucy's first drawing, but turn the dining table round so that it is parallel with the island - surely that provides more space on each side to walk past to patio doors? and more space between table and each of the island and the sofa area.
