Narrow townhouse remodelling ideas.

last month

We live in a narrow townhouse and would like to improve on the layout on a tight budget, primarily to:

  1. Move the living/kitchen/diner to the ground floor (which may include a small single storey rear extension).
  2. Enable all bedrooms to be located upstairs across the 1st & 2nd floors (we are currently located two floors away from the kids).

The grd floor is currently dark, cold and generally unloved with an awkward access to the garden. The garden is east-facing garden so very limited natural light from the rear (the front of the house gets lots of daylight for most of the day so the 1st floor is so light and airy).

Any cost effective design suggestions to improve the layout to address some of the above issues?

Note that with the exception of the wall between the utility and bedroom, all the grd floor walls appear to be structural walls.

Many Thanks.
