Living room dilemma

Hi guys,
I'm back again following on from the previous post about the fireplace dilemma. We managed to source a refurbishrd cast iron fireplace, oak surround and granite hearth in the end.
Being design inept, our dilemma this time around is choosing the right style rug for our living room. In the photo is our old rug from the previous house just to bring something soft to walk on.
Attached below are a couple we have our eye on but are reluctant to pull the trigger on currently. The zebra is a wild choice and I quite like various oriental? Style rugs shown in the second link.

Following this we will look for a tv unit in either natural wood or white.

Whatever the style, pick one with a touch of colours from both your sofas, just to unify the room. Lovely sitting room by the way…

Hi Karen, What a fantastic statement sofa - this is going to look great in your Living room. I would suggest you keep all your walls one colour, as the impact will be from your sofas, but I’d avoid putting a darker colour behind your sofa as it may result in this statement blending into the wall colour and not having the ‘wow’ piece you are wanting. I would recommend either Potters Clay 3, which is a pale, greyed off, taupe colour, or Chalk Blush 3 which is a pale, redder toned neutral. Both of these colours have a red undertone so will sit nicely against the purple colouring in your sofa. I’ve picked out a gorgeous mirror and lamp which I think will look great in your living room (below). I’d also suggest looking out for individual statement pieces for accessories to complete your room. Hi. Is everything already ordered/bought? I might look at linen for the curtains if not to add a different texture. Does the fireplace actually exist? If it does I might have the furniture arranged at right angles to it. Have you already looked at sisal or sea grass rugs? I think the texture adds warmth. I might be tempted to add a little more colour, aubergine would work for a pattern in cushions, art etc. Do also mix up the textures for cushions, throw etc and add some pattern. I might also add brass or gold for a mirror, picture frames etc as it will look great against the olive. Plants also add life, at minimum I'd add a large potted one by the patio doors.

Did you have wallpaper originally? Looks like the wall has been stripped and I was going to suggest......well, wallpaper. Something with a natural look so it doesn’t distract you when watching tv. So things like grasscloth, concrete effect, brick effect etc., nothing with glitter or a metallic sheen. Actually brick slips or slate brick slips would look really nice, depending on budget. A couple of low side tables either side of the tv unit to help disguise plug sockets and a tall indoor plant next to the patio door will finish things off nicely. Hope this helps, here’s some inspo.

This is what it looks like now, we’ve not touched this room since we moved in ;( we had some brill ideas on the initial post, unfortunately I’m still stuck on the layout, Ive got to keep the same sofa and flooring (and patio doors) for costs but everything else can go but can’t seem to do anything with the layout, I hate this room :((

Thanks for all of your thoughts, suggestions and kind comments guys! The room has come a long way from the space we started with, that's for sure.

We're looking at rugs with dimensions around 2x3m which will allow the front feet of both sofas to sit on top - i vaguely remember reading that being a rule somewhere. We're not set on those two either, they're just examples of what we think we like so if you have any other suggestions feel free to throw them our way!

Here’s the “rules” on placing a rug in a living room. I know when we were looking for a rug we found it was the hardest part of finishing the room! Have a look at Next and Dunelm for some cost effective rugs. We chose a traditional Persian rug in the end, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but we love it and it creates a very cosy vibe.
