Help for bedroom window dressing please!!

Hi folks,

I am trying to think how to dress the below bedroom window. The room is to be plastered and painted F&B All White, with the coving and popcorn ceiling removed. The room is east facing, so gets morning sun, ie we definitely need something to block the light, but during the day want the full view.

The blinds there at present are just temporary and even though they’re black out, lots of light gets in around the edges, so I don’t think blinds will be enough. Could combine with curtains or go for shutters or…?

If shutters, what colour with aluminium windows? If curtains, fabric suggestions would be great! You can see we have blue and white theme going on.

I'll have to get on the band wagon and chip in on how amazing that view is, however completely get the need for some proper shut eye in the evening.

I see this has been recommended a few times and I could agree that given the width of your window frame it would be possible to install a channel in which a block out roller blind can glide in and effectively stop any light bleed around the edges.

Often these would have to be motorised as the chain isn't available due to the track, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Hi quick sketch attached which hopefully will get you thinking on non standard options to avail of the triple aspect and views. The bed is centred on the West facing window, so even though there isn't symmetry in the rest of the room, balance is created, focused on the bed. I've shown a freestanding headboard behind the bed - something along these lines....there are design options available which means no need for a bedside locker to the side. I've stolen a small amount of space from the adjacent bedroom (sorry kids!) & pushed the entrance door back into the hall slightly. There is no door to ensuite, but the curved wall which becomes part of the shower creates an entrance & cuts of what you don't want to see (the wc) but allows light in, views out to and from the North. This curve also creates a natural line to change floor covering - say from carpet to tile. Theres approx 5m of wardrobe tucked under the eaves with curved ends (if budget will allow!) and also His & Hers drawer sets either side of entrance door.

Hi, It is a tricky one :( Do you want curtains? If so, a small track rail (like what is there at the moment) it probably best as it is slim and allow curtains to be out of the way of the door hinges when open. Otherwise, for a more minimalist look, you could get « clip on » blinds. I’m assuming the soil pipe is near to the top right corner. There could be two entrances to the bathroom if you had a smaller shower and placed the bath diagonally across the corner under the window. For added light to the wardrobe area, the bed partition need not be full height The TV position might be an issue, perhaps where the dressing table is shown….. Lovely big room, I am imagining a lovely view is through the patio windows…

Don’t get plantation shutters if you want the view. They are great for privacy and blocking a view. Maybe a solid shutter would work as you open the whole thing.

I’m not sure about shutters. Where would they stack when open? You don’t seem to have the room for that. I think simple blackout lined curtains would look lovely, but again there isn’t much room either side to draw them. Maybe blinds are the most appropriate solution?

You could have a blackout blind which has channels each side in which the blind runs, and keeps the light out from the sides. I think shutters would obscure that gorgeous view, as would curtains.

I think my preference would be solid panel shutters, but I agree a key question would be how thick they will be when fully folded back. In this picture from Shutterly Fabulous, they don't look like they would block the window view much...

Our window is considerably wider that that of course (175cm wide), so it would have multiple panels presumably? Also, what colour do you think? Blue?

Otherwise, I think the blind with side tracks will have to do, though hopefully they make the side tracks in a similar colour to the actual window (i.e. anthracite grey!)? If anyone knows of any, please let me know!

The challenge with shutters is that when folded back they will hang below the sloping ceiling/wall. From the pictures it looks as though something which hinges at the top would be best, but I’ve no idea how that could be made safely.

I don’t think the shutters would hang below the sloping ceiling, but they would protrude beyond the sloping ceiling, if you know what I mean, but we may build out below the sloping ceiling anyway with shelves / cupboards.

But to be honest, shutters v expensive so cassette blinds looking more likely, thanks for the link!

Given the coomb of the ceiling, I think that KatLucy is right. The best option would be a Roman Blind. Your view is stunning, simply stunning. Can you see part of it when you are in bed? I would not want to lose this if you can. For that reason, and because of the coomb, I can’t see shutters working.

Similarly, there’s no real space for curtains on either side of the window and they’ll spoil the view and the simplicity of the window form.

Opt for a fabric that you love that will give you pleasure when you want privacy but won’t detract from that beautiful view during the day.

Does a rich navy velvet with a copper geometric design to pick up the copper in your lamps appeal? expensive but with roman blinds you use less fabric.

Your cushions are blue with white highlights. Maybe a white background with a blue pattern to keep things light and fresh.

Try brands like Jane Churchill or Harlequin for fabrics that are not ridiculously expensive but will be contemporary. Their websites make it easy to browse and find something you like

Why would you spoil that view? Just get a pull down blind, night sorted, lovely view daytime, if needed!

Thanks Eileen - that is what I am asking for, window dressing that won't spoil the view but that will allow a good night's sleep!

I can’t see the cushions properly but they look like William Morris? Maybe you could look at the willow pattern which comes in different blues? i also like the flax which may tie in with the carpet. Perhaps add a little more of the blue in different stripes for more cushions and throws? i know zara have a number of striped linens but can’t recall the colours but there are quite a lot around

i’d get a few samples, in the pure willow there’s a light grey which looks to have a blue tinge but i think the majority of his fabrics work together

Update on where we are... Ended up getting roman blinds - they weren't the perfect colour which is a very long and boring story but think they look okay. Still need to get new bedside wall lights (open to suggestions!) and something for over the bed.
