Garden inspiration please

last year

We've just cleared two areas of the garden. We live by the sea on the west coast of Wales - idyllic but can get extremely windy! What could we plant in both areas and is there anything in particular I should be cautious of? Thank you/ diolch.😎

I suggest you visit the RHS website. They have no end of advice for planting in different locations, including coastal. www.rhs.org.uk

I've designed loads of steep gardens. They need careful consideration to work well. Measure the level change carefully (or get it professionally surveyed). They start planning it out on paper to make sure you can fit everything in. The danger is that you start by the house and create your largest seating/entertaining area here, then get to the top of the garden and end up with a steep bank that is not useful for anything. The general rule is that more small walls are better than one large, looming retaining wall. Invest in the garden structure (retaining walls) then make use of the levels. Create different rooms at different levels to give the garden some interest and ensure that you can use all the garden. Create an interesting journey around the garden and put a seating area in the sunniest spot. Soften walls by running steps parallel to the house rather than straight up the garden. Make use of the level changes with water features and cascading planting.

Yes thats a great choice. Its amazing how much these things influence us in later life. The transformation that took place in Max's bedroom was almost as amazing as the ultimate forest. I think this is why I love seeing the transformation of a garden nearly as much as the end result.

Here we go. Had a little play around but thought this might look good as it gives you multiple areas of seating and interest. I made the assumption that the entrance to the garden from the decking is on the LHS. So immediately below the decking as you walk in is a square section with what could be a statue or water feature. I think a water feature would be nice here as you’d be able to hear it from the decking as well. Then a fairly broad area of paving making the most of the views. After that is a planting area with big boulders as these feature a lot in Japanese gardens. Plants and boulders surrounded by grey slate chips to make it look like a river and a little cobble stream that runs under a bridge. Bridge then leads to a circular patio. I kept the steps to the bottom gate as they were as it seemed easier but feel free to alter things as you wish. Just for fun I added (or attempted to) a pergola. Anyway that’s my two penny’s worth:-), hope it gives you some inspiration. (click pics to enlarge).

It depends what your into. I was chairman of an allotment and I obviously love veg. You can have both in front garden and they look great are easy to maintain and you get popular with the neighbours. You can fix this really easily and quite cheaply with a a bit of planning and digging. You need to widen your boarders. So many people are scared of making the boarders wiser but they make a big difference. Male curved on the edges and being the border out by 30cm at very minimum. Get some larger shrubs of shrubs that will get larger for the back of the boarder against the neighbouring fence. Space them well, it’s cheaper, will look neat and give it a year or two you’ll have quite a deep backdrop. I’d put the palm tile ones then further forward. Along the drove I would make a new boarders and add a rosemary hedge. Rosemary is fab and I’m always nipping out my garden to grab a handful. Also the top corner by the house of add a rhubarb. I became so popular with the neighbours! They even peak over to see if it’s nearly ready to start picking.

The costal area is a very unique garden environment and you should indeed think about what you can grow there. As Sonia said, the RHS will have some ideas of what goes in it. You should also consider the amount of sun each area gets, the soil etc.

Ornamental grasses, sea thrifts and erigerons usually do quite well in costal areas. Tamarix is a lovely looking plant that will also do quite well in a sunny position in a costal area.
