Sliding doors only?

We are doing an extension which will create three openings at the back of the house
We are considering using sliding doors for each opening
Are there any disadvantages people can see to just having sliding doors as a means of access to the back garden from the house?

No disadvantages regarding access. My son has 2 sliders and has never had a problem.

When we refurbished our kitchen we blocked up the back door and now use the sliding door for access outside. No problems at all, and I like how they don’t clutter up the kitchen or the patio outside.

We've just paid the deposit on some grey external/white internal aluminium bifolds. Managed to find a company who had one on display so got to have a good feel for how it all worked. I couldn't bring myself to buy one that I'd not seen! It's just a shame very few companies who sell them have showrooms, out of the 8 I rang only two could show me their product!

We would advise it is completely dependant on the space and your requirements. Walk-in wardrobes look great if they are kept tidy, however a plus for having doors is that it can conceal any mess and give more protection for clothing. Another trend for walk-in wardrobes is to have smoked glass doors mixed with open elements this could also work with matt lacquered doors. Alternatively you could choose to have open elements for items such as bags, shoes or coats (things you know that are easy to keep tidy) then hinged doors for other modules.

Hi, I know this discussion has been a while now, but what option did you finally go with? We are also in a similar situation. We are considering a bifold or slide and turn option. Sunseekers reviews seem better than new wave. I look forward to hearing what option you went with.

I think this is a really common question for a lot of people. If you only need partial opening (so no bifolds) then sliding doors is the most practical solution, for all the reasons you've given - no doors flapping about, doors don't take up space internally or externally and you can leave it a little open or a lot open, plus maximum glass for light and views. As much as I love proper original Crittal, my husband totally thinks they look like glass garage doors - and that image ruined them for me! Still love them in other people's houses (when done well), but together with all the practical reasons, we won't have them in ours.

Hi, not sure if you've sorted this yet. There are two factors to consider (rather than disadvantages) with a sliding door. First of all, the doors take up space in your opening when open. A two panel sliding door will take up around half, a three panel slider takes up a third if all the panels stack behind each other.

The other consideration is if your doors are routinely used for garden access for instance, in a smaller terraced house, they may be the only back doors out to the garden.

Quickly opening a hinged door is faster and easier than partially opening a slider. And that's about it. The advantage of sliding doors is they take up no space on the patio when open and the give you larger glass panels, more light and reduced visible aluminium compared to bifold or French doors. Bifolding doors can be configured with a traffic door, enabling easy entry and exit without having to fold all the panels back.
