cooker hood dilemma

Hi, we are redoing the kitchen and replacing the 800mm hob. We want to get rid of the current cooker hood and have a more modern canopy type of thing ( maybe). The kitchen will still be shaker with a modern twist but we can’t work out how to vent a cooker hood. We can’t go into the ceiling and across as it is a solid concrete beam and block house. The current one has a venting tube along the top of the pelmet. Maybe I could cupboards along but I would rather an open shelf.

Any idea please folks?
Also, any views on vented hobs? Do you loose a lot of space?

Depends how free you are from previous kitchen look / design. What I would advise my customer in this case would be to open the wall do light comes in and recirculation filter.

Do you have the ducting going out to external wall?

Vented hobs do take up a lot of space as the motor needs about 200mm clearance below the hob so you will lose at least 1 drawer underneath. As a rule of thumb in designing a kitchen you shouldn't make the extraction worse than what it already is, but you can fit a wall mounted expelair type extractor at 60 litres/sec on another wall, Also if you start moving walls you can have building control involved and they would pick up on your extractor. The modern looking shaker doors have narrower frames and don't look as chunky now and there's a few handleless versions now and true handleless styles as well.

If you opt for a canopy/top box there's the telescopic cooker hoods which look smart.

It's completely up to you and what you feel looks right. Obviously the closer the extraction the better it will work and 750 is the usual distance from the cooktop. However, if you prefer the higher bridging unit, that will be completely fine too as steam goes up! good luck Emily x

If you do opt to have a chimney extractor, neff for example have chimney extensions of 750mm for taller ceilings for some of their extractors. The chimney can easily be cut to allow for the sloping ceiling by a competant kitchen installer, I've had to cut down many chimneys when I was an installer. Your kitchen designer should be able to advise you the different options you have though for your extractor and a high ceiling.

They work or they wouldn’t manufacture them. Whether or not they are aesthetically pleasing is a matter of opinion. Personally I think they’re ugly and when you have a newly fitted kitchen and it is all streamlined and then you have what looks simmilar to a TV slanted on the wall it spoils the overall look. If you want the streamlined then you need to look at an integrated or built in one. Don’t forget to look at the noise level and the extraction rate for effectiveness.

Be mindfully of the ducting you use, some can be very noise if not secured and echoes in the kitchen.but good value for money, equivalent AEG or Bosh can cost 3 times more
