Lighting Design Dilemma

Pendant in corner of living room? yay or nay

been really struggling to find lighting I like for the living room. my husband wants downlights/spots but i dont think its cosy enough for a lounge.

however, I recently found this image on pinterest and now i really like the idea of spots plus one cluster pendant in the corner. (spots on when you want it bright, pendant on for cosy!) our room will be a similarish layout with corner sofa so i think it would work.

but my question is, is this one of those things that looks great on pinterest but in reality will look a bit strange/out of place??? should we just go for spots and a tall lamp in the corner instead??

((p.s the electrics arent an issue re light location, sparky hubby and living room still to be rewired))

I agree with the lamp option, it provides more flexibility rather than a fixed pendent which may just look odd

Quick answer. No. Try a large floor lamp like the Artemide Tolomeo that you can move over your sofa instead. They are dimmable and movable and will give a more directional and flexible light.

I really think that it's not on your face or in direction to TV so open minded but nee to see if not to much distraction to eye. Indirect light above coving its better though

I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise.

As far as flooring goes, you can get light colour carpets which are bleach cleanable. I have a grey feature wallpaper in my bedroom, but the other walls a much lighter colour. I did want white carpets but was concerned about going too light, so went for a pale cream instead. Had very thick underlay so it feels luxurious. Stains have so far come out brilliantly just using stain remover foam, including a spilled bottle of berry cider and brown tinted dry shampoo which accidentally emptied all over the carpet. Haven't even had to try the bleach yet. We have the same carpet in the children's bedrooms because it goes with everything and is so practical.

Hi Kelly. It looks a great room. I would just add a textured throw over the arm of the sofa and some contrast and texture for the cushions and perhaps introduce another pattern. If you don't like colour then texture is fine but blush would be great. You could also add sheepskin seat pads (try Nordic house) for the chairs or just a sheepskin rug thrown over the back of one chair for a much cheaper option. I'd also change the glass fruit bowl for something else, maybe an old misshaped wooden bowl but something in a different material/texture. Personally I feel the tv and art is hung just a little too high but the TV might be fine for you! A couple of accessories would also be great. I've attached a pic of a dandelight which looks great under a cloche. In terms of faux plants and I always say this (!) but I love pussy willow and eucalyptus together and will work well in your room. I agree with Carolina re adding something on the left. You don't need this at all and may hate feature walls but I can see you like industrial so have found these wallpapers from rebel walls which I just thought I'd share! I agree with ggirl though, just let the room evolve a little more when you find things you love as it looks great already

Whether or not to use a valance is dependent on the style of bed and the room it's in. I'm about to make up gathered valances for a client in a colourful fabric by Voyage Decoration. It will soften the hard lines of the wood bed frame and add lots of colour to the single beds. The same fabric is being used for the gathered valance on the large angled bay window. This Edwardian room can take the large areas of pattern and will benefit from the frilliness. In another room, I've specified a plain valance in a dobby weave with pleats at the corners and in the middle of the long sides of the bed. The room is elegant but simple. In another, more contemporary home, I've used upholstered bedsteads so no valances were required. Incidently, in the USA what we refer to as a bed valances is known as a dust ruffle. Yes it catches the dust, but throwing the valance in a washing machine quickly solves that problem.

It depends on how big the room is, how light or dark the walls are and the type of spots. Abigail Aherne has a huge lounge with dark walls. She has 17 lamps in there! Lots of different types of lighting seems to be the best. You can get dim to warm spots, we have just bought some (Philips) and they are a game changer. Tala do gorgeous bulbs which again are high CRI and a lovely warm (but not yellow) glow. They also do pendant lights. I think certain downlighters can work in a lounge if they are strategically placed to highlight specific features, otherwise lamps are much better.

We all like different things and I’m a great fan of table or floor lamps. They create a cosy ambiance. I have one in each corner of my living room and I never put the overhead light on. Nice thing with lamps is they can be moved around the room. For me, that pendant light looks odd and I don’t like all the downlighters in a room that is suppose to be for relaxing.

Actually I'm not against the pendant in the corner. As long as the spotlights are on dimmers and you add other lamps around the room too I think the pendant will look modern and catchy. Just make sure its not too low ! :)

I like the look of it, its funky and different without being obnoxious. I find too many floor/table/wall lamps to be fussy and not my style so i would say go for it! You're lucky to have a live in electrician! If everything is on dimmers then you have so much flexibility.
