Amongst some great companies and projects, we are honoured that 3 out of 4 awarded projects were designed and installed by our team. Crittall House of the Year Award Competition.

Last year we took part is this radical remodelling project and completely transformed this beautiful SW London townhouse.

The house now features a large structural glass rooflight, that allows light in the kitchen and outlines the beautiful authentic brickwork. For the the internal doors we decided to use both Crittall and Cortizo products, that are extremely durable and aesthetically stunning.

Between the kitchen and garden we installed three doors which fully open to create a smooth transition into the outside space. The doors were designed in a bespoke combination to suit the project requirements, two of the doors opening outwards into the garden and one opening inwards onto a Juliet balcony, creating a lovely feature.

To mirror the Crittall on the ground floor, external doors were installed to the basement achieving consistency across the whole rear extension and a stunning view of the property from the garden.

If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. A part solid / part glazed roof with fully glazed walls may be the most successful. Attached image of a garden room with a large strategically placed roof light and two fully glazed walls.

Hi Justin, thank you for taking the time to reply to our query. It is difficult to compare systems because Deceuninck have not published very much technical information about that specific product on their website, but whilst in general terms uPVC may be able to perform fractionally better for U-values than aluminium (it depends on the system), our experience is that with slide and swing doors the weather rating (water tightness, air permeability and wind loading) tend to be much lower. I would also query the information you were given about security. The reason I say that is I cannot find any reference to their slide & swing doors having been tested to PAS24 standards (Building Regs Doc Q) or Secured by Design award standards. The technology of slide and swing doors is developing quickly, but it is starting from nearly 25 years behind bifold doors so will take some time to catch up - that said they are moving along quickly and in certain circumstances offer an alternative to bifold doors. For this property the owners were looking for the optimal combination between safety, security and aesthetics.
