Hiya, What a lovely space you've created - you must be so pleased! A little bit of advice for your blind - Fauxwood is a perfect material for a bathroom as it's easy to wipe clean and won't warp in steamy conditions. And to get the shutter look you speak about, choose tape instead of cords with your wide slats. You'll get a similar effect at a fraction of the price. Good luck, Zoe

Hi Lisa, I agree with Sonia (above comment) I would not remove the work surface space as it gives you space either side of the cooker to prepare/serve up. I love the shelving you have picked out as it brings a new dimension/texture to the space. Looking at your dining chairs you are not afraid of colour so I would pick a colour/tile that makes you smile and lay in an interesting pattern formation (herringbone/basket weave) to bring some colour and texture to the space. Wumi is exactly right: build a chimney breast 300mm deep and alcove cupboards and shelving 280mm deep. The chimney breast should protrude slightly further than the cupboard to make a feature. The fire surround should then be fixed to the chimney breast. If it's a gas fire, you need to take advice on materials to build the breast, as a softwood frame covered with plasterboard may not be legal as a fire hazard. May need two layers of fire proof plasterboard (fireline board).
