Living room with little wall space

Hi, all

We're in the process of buying our first home together. It's a leasehold apartment, so I can't change anything structural (nor will have budget for that), but the place is in good condition and I'm just thinking about how I can decorate it.

My main concern is the living room. It's a nice space with access to a little balcony, very bright. But because it has 2 floor-to-ceiling windows plus the entrance door, it doesn't have much empty wall space for the traditional sofa-sofa-TV layout, so I'm struggling to think how I would arrange the furniture.

Currently, we just have 1 tall bookcase (https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/liatorp-bookcase-white-00116595/ ) and a TV stand (https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/brusali-tv-bench-white-30439773/ ). Since we have a fair bit of furniture that needs to be purchased, I thought it would be good to have some ideas before, to then decide what I need to buy.

We don't have nor plan on having kids, so might not need a full set of sofas. I've been thinking about just 1 larger-ish sofa and then a couple of armchairs for guests, perhaps? But don't know if that would look nicer.

Then of course there's the TV, which needs space (ours is a bit bigger than the one in the photos below).

I don't know if the sofa or armchairs in front of the window (or partially?) would look good, considering it's not a huge space.

Really stuck with ideas, here... Any suggestions would be super appreciated :)

People do have sofas in front of windows, so that could be an option for you. I found these images of apartments furnished that way.

Thank you - Yes, I've seen similar ones, but all examples are from huge apartments, with grandiose rooms like these. I'm just not sure if it works in a "normal" sized room when I have a mix of walls and windows...

Cute house! Presumably there isn't a sofa opposite the one shown then? It's hard without pics but if you watch tv I'd go for a tv opposite the sofa where they have it. There may be room to put a small accent chair next to the tv angled towards the sofa (in the dining room wall corner).For the sofa itself I'd go for a light to mid shade, not dark otherwise it will overpower, choose something on legs and with slim arms to give a feeling of space. For a coffee table either glass or an upholstered footstool if you need extra seating. Mirror over the fire again and I'd probably include a slim floor lamp where they have too, maybe a swing arm pendant. If you can change the light something made of glass would be good to allow more light through. What styles do you like and do you have the dimensions of the room?

The fireplace is looking great. It looks like a fun project. I work from home too and it can be sometimes a bit much, not being able to break away from the work. I like surrounding myself with things that inspire my work rather than the work itself. Although, that niche you've got is screaming for a built-in bookshelf. But instead of using it as storage for workstuff, you could fill it with things you love instead. It would add texture and colour to the space. You could also consider having it in wood, to bring in the wood texture your wanted on the floor. I really like the colour palette you've chosen. I have a grey carpet myself. It would be easy to add a pop of blue on your chairs. If you are worried about the desk chair, there are products with castors for carpets. Another thought, is perhaps the desk can be pulled away from the wall, so it fills the room. It can act as your desk, as well as a meeting space or a family space in the evening. It also won't feel like you are facing a wall all day long.

@Katie Duke The space behind the table is the kitchen, yes. It's not really possible to alter that wall where that radiator is by the stairs since there are kitchen units on the other side of it. I've put some photos below if you're curious. I'll go back Friday to see it again. I didn't take any measurements when I went the first time and there also wasn't a floorplan so it makes it harder for me to envision what is or isn't possible. I'm currently thinking maybe to have a sofa in front of that alcove by the stairs, and then have a TV on the wall opposite (so to the left of the fireplace as you look at it). But not sure what size that alcove area is at the moment so I don't know if it's a possibility yet. Also there is some photos of the house before they renovated it (see below), and I think the layout of the living room would've allowed for a lot more flexibility before they added in the understairs wc!

I would position furniture in the living room to create a hall walkway through the room, rather than cut off part of the room and make into a hall - the hall would be small and dark and not very inviting so you'd compromise the living room and the hall. I think you need to embrace the fact that you live in a terraced house and look at other easier ways for you to enjoy the space more. Or at least live in it for a year and see if it still bothers you after that, no need to rush to change anything if you've just moved in.

Looks like a lovely bright room. I think that you already have the right ideas. Don’t over furnish it. One really comfy sofa with two armchairs (preferably with legs to create visual lightness and ease of movement) or even one armchair with a footstool or ottoman that you could use for your feet when you are snuggled up on the sofa watching tv.

Rather than a large coffee table, I’d plump for smaller tables and maybe one taller pedestal table next to the armchair for coffee/wine glasses.

Thank you! Yes, I think we'll have to play around with some basics and get a feel of what works for us... And buy the furniture slowly too, to make sure we get just what we need and in the right style/colours. A good dilemma to have, I guess!
