What length for parquet planks?

We’re laying new parquet flooring in our living/dining/kitchen open plan space. It’s a bright room, not huge but a decent size.

After much debate we’ve settled on a pale oak colour but we’re struggling on the size of the plank - from the samples we like best, UK Flooring Direct has 500mm length and Luxury Flooring has 380mm.

So my question is - what looks better? Is there a big difference in style? Should we be going for longer/shorter/narrower/wider? Or am I overthinking it?!

Any tips v welcome!

That's a tricky one as traditionally, parquet flooring is supposed to be done with small planks however, many are experimenting with larger planks.

However, it's worth considering your layout. For example, if the area is fairly large and square / rectangle - you can go for the larger planks (as you won't have an excessive amount of wastage and cuts) but if it is a number of different rooms with frequent narrowing of areas i.e. hallways and passageways - it may be better to stick to the smaller planks. That might be what I mean! :) Very new to all of this. would you say that is what is used in these examples? if so, yes. I mean, the planks don't have to be the whole length of the room, but this general kind of thing. Any recommendations for a place to buy this kind of stuff from? Thanks

Hi, I think it'll look fine actually. I went for structural (20mm deep with 6mm wear layer) semi-smoked engineered oak floorboards upstairs which were 180mmx1900mm planks. They look great in my 1930's house and tie in well with the original 1 over 3 panel antique pine doors. I would ask why you want lacquered finish though? It means if you get it scratched the only way to repair is to completely sand and re-lacquer. Whereas if you go for an oiled finish any high traffic areas can be patch-sanded and re-oiled as needed. Its worth asking the installer to open several packs at once and select planks at random from each to help balance out any colour variations between batches. Also I think it looks much more natural when they stagger the planks randomly so you don't end up with a pattern emerging. These photos were taken just after oiling so its a little glossy, it dried to a matte finish which is what we wanted for the natural look.

Unless you've got hours of spare time, I would avoid reclaimed parquet. I've just spent untold hours cleaning up a mix of reclaimed parquet I had in the loft (hard bitumen) and recently lifted parquet (wet bitumen) from our old extension before it was demolished. Although you can get glues that work with bitumen, you still need to ensure the blocks are relatively flat and clean. Worst thing is, although it looked like I had more than enough, some of it was unusable due to damage, so I'm now 3-4 sq metres short, and it's proving impossible to find the correct size and wood type. I didn't have a choice as the whole ground floor is herringbone parquet, so had to match it up, otherwise I'd have gone for new, it's not much different in price to reclaimed, and you don't need to clean it or sand everything level.

Crikey… so much repetition! We called cushion vinyl as an option, right at the very start of your thread, L Ray. Poor you having to read so much repeat. Cushion vinyl (cv) sometimes gets confused with "lino". True lino is linoleum - look it up here. It's a natural product which is fab but being resilient it's a little hard and cold, perhaps, for most peoples bedrooms AND it is quite expensive and likely to blow your budget. CV, as we previously mentioned, is a genuine option. Good manufacturers make it authentic looking, as "rinq" previously vouched for. We gave you some links in our first post of the UK's biggest supplier of cv. A Belgium manufacturer called IVC. For more info click here. We supply all their products so we'd suggest you carry out a little online research of their collections (Leoline and Avenue) Polyflor should be considered for their well priced and authentic looking luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). You may find their products fit within your budget. Click here for some ideas. However, without doubt, if you are looking for wood style flooring, the cheapest/entry level products will be cushion vinyl. Oh, as per "forzaitalia", you will need a little sub-floor preparation for those floor boards. You may be able to get away with hardboarding them rather than ply. Hardboard is cheaper and is acceptable when using in conjunction with CV. Just depends on how good/bad your floorboards are. Hope this helps you a bit more, L Ray.
