Ugly exterior
Comments (6)First of all I would replace the down pipe with a rain chain. The white drain pipe looks ugly against the bricks. Then put up hanging baskets with lots of colour and a couple of pot plants on either side as in the previous comment. I would either tile or paint the steps. The grey concrete is very blah. An entrance should be saying come and visit!...See MoreWhite and light required, many questions!
Comments (49)I don't mind the current colours although a greys and beiges tend to suck light out of a room, a brighter colour rather than just white will help. I agree with much of what Jill says above, with a few tweaks ... the lighting needs attention. The room needs some interest, colour and texture to create depth. Get a larger rug, more colourful, with organic pattern which draws the eye outward. Big enough to sit the furniture on. Pick up some of the colours from the new rug and get some cushions. A couple of plants would help with texture and add life to the room. I know you are using the mirrors to add light and space but the one under the stairs is just reflecting the underneath of the stairs ... try a colourful print of a pathway between trees for example, to draw the eye beyond the room otherwise it's a bit bland. The TV is just on a stand that is too small and a bit low, go for a wider piece or try positioning the unit against the other wall in that same corner so it is facing the sofas, then the TV won't look so out of balance. If you make the room a bit livelier and interesting the light issue won't be such a problem. Consider pale turquoise walls for example rather than just white and add some artwork....See MoreAnyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MoreHelp to brighten up my garden
Comments (14)Lovely potential to develop this space! Looking back towards your house from the garden area, what about window boxes under each of your ground floor windows with simple fixed shutters (louvre doors) either side of the long window? Keep your house walls light colour as at present with white painted window frames and either white or gentle soft green door, shutters, gate & window boxes. I would want to plant troughs along the left hand wall with some climbing plants as well as colour as in Kevin's sketch & I would also consider an outdoor mirror in the centre opposite the RH ? Kitchen window to reflect colours of the window box planting back to the house but I wouldn't want to restrict access back to the house by too much overplanting. Certainly power washing the yard & covering with pea gravel could be good or paving as in main garden. Instead of knocking down the wall & if expenses allow, what about a wrought iron gate giving an impression of peeping into a Moroccan courtyard?! Enjoy your exciting project & have fun!...See MoreUser
