is this mad for a hall/stairs/landing?

Hi lovely people,

I have no taste so I need help! Here is my hall and stairs. Is this wall paper and paint completely mad? I think it’s really pretty and the space is really bright, but I wondered if it would look awful as the ceiling is high on the stairs so there would be massive columns of the pattern going up? Or is that a good thing?!! Help pretty please.

Bless you! You could take inspiration from the colours in the wallpaper, for example that beautiful duck egg blue base, then add maybe the coral or the deep grey. Keep the flooring neutral if you do go for a pattern on the walls. I know my tastes are very traditional, but do you like this wallpaper? Would look lovely on the upper walls up the stairs. Just an idea.

It’s a bit sugary for my taste but it would work in your space.

You should also note that it looks great on the pictures because of the bright white woodwork….. so potentially you are looking at quite a big job because the brightness of the flowery wallpaper will necessitate a new carpet, curtain and repainting all the woodwork too.

I don’t like it at all. Your stairs are a lovely classical design so I would stick with that. Of course that’s just my opinion.......😊

Hiya, we have a Victorian hallway and it is done very similar to Rukmini’s first image. We have a greeny grey under the dado (including the skirting and dado itself) and on the doors and architraves. It’s Blanket by Paint & Paper library which is a little darker than Rukmini’s pic. Then an off white above the dado and on the ceiling. It used to be off white all over and the grey definitely has made it darker. On the other hand it also feels smarter and shows the marks less! Swings and roundabouts. I wouldn’t have three colours, I would pick one colour plus off white above the dado/picture rail (Pointing seems sensible!!) Your tiles look browny grey so would suggest looking at Ammonite by F&B and its family of colours - (Cornforth White, Purbeck Stone). See below for the F&B families of greys. If you want bluey or greeny greys then Paint & Paper Library are a good source but be careful to see if they will go with your tiles.

Hi Kerry, That's a challenge. Make sure you dust off, rub down and dust off again before wiping damp cloth over. Allow to dry before you apply undercoat and your chosen paint colour. I'm intrigued by you saying you have no taste. Do you mean that you struggle to put things together or has someoone said that to you? On your choices for your hall, I can't comment because I couldn't live with it. Maybe think about what it is about the image that appeals to you, is it the fact that the colours are clean and bright rather than muted? Maybe you want some pattern?

You can definitely go for something bold but perhaps more muted in colour? Olive green for example.

Textured wall papers are making a come back and yours is fantastic. Why not using the colour range given by Sonia and have a two tone stair case? For instance duck blue or sage below the rail and dusty pink above?

If you are really brave, you can also create a two-tones effect on your embossed wallpaper. There are a few videos on YouTube. Have fun.

I like bright colours, but when you live with bright patterns I think they can be too in your face. The colours are lovely but not in equal parts. Duck egg blue always looks elegant, mixed with pale, minty greens and different shades of pink it can look lovely. You must get the quantity of bold colour right though. Deep pink could be a chair or cushion, the colour easiest on the eye can be the walls, or a neutral colour works well in a large space. Neutral can be shades of brown, green, yellow, muted red, it doesn't have to be beige, cream or natural.
