Kitchen - what do you wish you'd done but didn't !

I'm on the brink of signing off on my new kitchen with Howdens - scary moment . Can't help thinking I've missed a trick or two. Is there anything you didn't go for which you now wished you had ?!!

A lighting designer, hands down. Lots of electiricians put LED lights in a grid and don't give much thought to the type of light (ie warm or cool high CRI etc), and don't really address what is to highlighted or not, possibly this is because an electirican is fitting the lights, not using light as a design tool. I think lighting is one of the most diificult aspects of design. The John Cullen website has some useful tips.

Don’t penny pinch. Have exactly what you want. Kitchens are a big project and expensive so you need to get it right.

Get more than one design and quote.

Howdens are not the cheapest. Only today we have beaten one of their quotes with better quality items too. The reason the customer initially approached us was because we can offer a 1200mm worktop without a joint. The big sheds such as Howdens are very limited. Remember they are sales people not designers.

Think of any small extras you might want adding such as a hot water tap before the worktop is fitted.

I'm feeling pleased to say I have now be later in life been enjoying some of the things I'd love to have, for some time so they don't count for my 'one thing I'm still hoping for..' I love my upmarket induction hob with timer that saves my food from my memory when distracted by a phone call for a chat-length of time; no day goes by without the thrill of pulling open my kitchen's larder cupboard where the contents are so visible and high space is utilised. I agree with ? about having a bidet and have just had one installed and another wish - a walk-in shower Yeah!

Our current square kitchen has a central island and acts as a bit of a roundabout as we have through traffic to contend with. Drives me mad when people come through the busy working area instead of round the other side. About to enlarge both kitchen and island, I just need to make sure I keep people out of my bit!

marivon1 helpful to know, thank you. The UK does not use European/metric sizes. I have not looked into buying Ikea beds in the past as I don't like being restricted to their bed linen, although in the end I don't find much I like in the UK anyway and end up buying linen in Europe, the US or Australia. I had a look and yes, you are right ... last year (2014) Ikea started to stock the smaller UK imperial sized beds but you can still get the European metric ones online. Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite.
