Long, dark bedroom hallway makeover.
Comments (39)Finally finished the hall and the transformation is complete. Kept the doors but painted the architrave and all other woodwork (Farrow & Ball Dimity Eggshell). Walls (F & B Joa's White Modern Emulsion) Carpet is sisal. Window shutters California Shutter Co. Wall up/down-lighters John Lewis, as are the ceramic radiator shelf lights, painted to match wall. LED Panel 'skylights' are magical. Wired to an external Dusk 2 Dawn sensor via a relay (To transpose output to Dawn 2 Dusk) they are activated by two occupancy sensors either end of the hallway and only operate during daylight hours, thus giving the very real effect that it's daylight flooding in. The wall lights are for night time and if it only needs to be subdued lighting, then the remote controlled shelf lights are used. The flickering flame wall sconces either side of the old loft door are for amusement at best, but look nice. Now to find some suitable wall decoration and also fit a curtain and tie-back at the mid-point. That will allow guests who use the end bedrooms some night time privacy when using the bathroom down there. Thanks to all you Houzzers for your input and support!...See MoreOur big victorian hallway
Comments (15)I think I would maybe try a pale grey carpet upstairs as it looks great against white woodwork. Maybe then have a striped runner going up the stairs picking up the grey with the treads in white? You could always add a brighter colour stripe in if you want more interest or you may be able to find one with a bright trim. Strong white by the way is a very pale grey (sorry just in case you didn't know as it doesn't really show as such in the pic as its up against the dark grey downpipe). I think it's quite hard to make a period property bland if it's got architectural features. If a console table doesn't fit, add one in the square part of the hall and have a gallery of art or photos etc. Panelling would make it feel wider but there's the cost to consider. Maybe a long narrow bench? I have this bench from french connection which would be perfect size ( as only 20cm deep ) but maybe a little contemporary. Maybe something ornamental placed on the top of the landing to draw your eye up? You could also try hanging a few lights down the hall which will make it feel shorter. What type of front door do you have by the way? Is any of it glazed?...See MoreHallway - Working with Victorian Tile
Comments (47)This looks really great, and I'm particularly interested as we have a similar hall with an artificially narrow entrance (1950s conversion of an 1880s house!) which carries round in an L shape all the way to the back of the flat. We also have the sloping understairs ceiling and the height makes it dark and cold. We've thought of dropping the ceiling and having spotlights as you've done, but it's the floor we're most uncertain about. Our tiles are older than yours and in very poor condition, plus very cold underfoot, so we're still undecided whether to cover up entirely (carpet? engineered wood?), saving the floor for future inhabitants, or actually (eek) taking it up. The majority of the tiled floor is in the communal hallway, so it's still there for people to enjoy. Anyway, sorry - just wanted to say also I love your colour scheme and the panelling isn't something I would have considered but it looks fantastic and we have very similar panelled doors, so I think we should consider it....See Morelong dark hallway
